What is in a name?

Hello, We have been looking for a person to take a data file, make sure the data is valid, add the data to our database table. We have tried several names but the people we get seem not to be what we are looking for.
Data Analyst (HR made this mistake) - people who analyze your system
Data Entry - people who copy data into your database table
but generally not familiar with validationData Specialist - we have got all sorts for this
but mainly people looking for higher level positionThe job is not that hard thus we are not paying a large amount. We just do not know what to advertise. We put the job description in the ad, but we still get a large range of resumes. djj

In my brief experience at this I would say that it probably will not make any difference what you call the job as a lot of unqualified and overqualified people will apply and it is up to you to figure out which ones are worth interviewing. I would however give a good description of what is expected and the approximate pay range. For my last advertised job 23 people applied over a 3 month period and of that I interviewed 5 in person and called 2 others. The rest I did not want to waste time with because they were either too qualified (a few could be my boss) or they only met a few of the requirements.

Presumably, you'll have to teach 'em how to validate it anyway, so that sounds about right.

Yes it is data entry (as suggested, migration might be a better term) but the person can not be a parrot and must be able to make judgment calls. djj

If you are talking about manually entering the data, I would suggest an Analyst to build an application that encapsulates the validation rules, and then a data entry person to do the day day entry. Although the validation Application would cost a bit up front, it would allow you to use a regular data entry person and reduce long term costs. a temp agency in your local area could probably assist you in finding the correct fit for the data entry portion. If nothing else, they would help determine the correct terminology being used for the position in your area.

Yep, we have tried temp agency. The problem is we have most of the data validation automated but there are still things a human must do as an example we get data where the city name has be abbreviated and the zip code is wrong, if we are lucky the state is correct. We get this data from a source you would think would have clean data but its not clean at all. Every time we think we have all the variations another one appears so someone has to manually go through the data problems, this may be 10 records out of 1000 but it still needs done. djj

Ouch, I've been on both sides of that fence in my career. Clean location data is hard to come by. you'll need a smart data entry operator that doesn't know their own worth yet, such as a student just starting into IT. Unfortunately, a smart data entry operator is like military intelligence, pretty much an oxymoron. I'd also suggest letting the app kick the bad records (unrecognized city/state/zip) into a batch rather than requiring correction at that moment, so the normal flow isn't stopped. Operators tend to get cranky if something breaks their groove ;) Good luck!

focus on the abilities/duties, not on the name. When I left my last job, my boss advertised for my replacement as "junior programmer" Although that was my job title for the 4+ years I was there, those were not my duties. A junior programmer generally works under a senior programmer, duties are often directed from a superior. My duties were: fixing cables for terminals: Assessing and diagnosing hardware problems, calling tech support and sometimes even field servicing some hardware Assessing and diagnosing software problems, identifying bugs, fixing them, installing fixes Software design Software writing Software installation Remote station communication Data analysis, Data mining, Data prediction Payroll tax modififications, support, testing and integration with state/federal governments for communicaton and validation of datasets. writing manuals, writing other documentation Tutoring all personel in computer related activities from PC's to Accounting system (I wrote) All accounting areas as necessary until software can be automated to fill the gap (in other words I had to be fill-in for any accountant and versed in all areas of accounting such that I could write software for all areas of accounting to support or replace any accounting personel). And the list went on and on and on. I didn't bother with titles, I told folks I was a "one-man-shop" which is slang for I did everything related to the computer. There was a data processing manager, she knew nothing about computers, she was a supervisory only "this needs to be done, don't know how you need to do it, just do it" type roll. She did at least know accounting. Still, in the end, my boss replaced me with two programmers, one senior, one junior, and I am sure cussed me a storm for him having to do that. I was much happier here. My title now is "software engineer" which is highly undescriptive, my duties are 3d Graphics, 4D analysis (temporal 3D related activies), physics, AI, logic and predictive systems, as well as all areas of development. Also being senior in experience, I am the one everyone comes to for questions on every single subject related to development. So write your list of needs, ignore the title, sure the ad costs more, but it beats running the wrong ad for 10 weeks looking for the wrong people: run the right ad for 2 weeks lookng for the right person.
