Sometimes (actually, a lot of the time!) when I'm typing my hand will brush over the touch pad on my laptop, moving the caret and causing me to type over another piece of text, or add text to the wrong place in a document. My old laptop had a switch on it that would turn on/off the built in mouse pad, but my new one doesn't. I tried to disable it in device manager but it doesn't have a "disable" option for the built-in mousepad, only an option to uninstall it - which is useless because it doesn't work and then reinstalls it again as soon as I reboot. Is there any way, such a registry fix or 3rd party software for example, to enable/disable the touch pad according to my current need? 99.9% of the time, I will use a proper mouse, but there are occasions when I'll need to fight with use the touch pad, so I don't really want to remove it permanently...

BIOS?  That's usually where those settings are kept.  Mine had options for disabling it 24/7, leaving it enabled or switching it off when an external mouse is plugged in.

I'm pretty confident there's an option in the control panel to "Disable touchpad when external mouse connected" Or something to that description.

One time in the field, I taped a piece of cardboard over mine because of the same problem. In that part of the world, I couldn't find any decent tape so I ended up with a gooey outline of it on the screen (from when it was closed for transport.) Luckily the laptop actually belonged to another employee back home. I know this doesn't really help, but I couldn't resist.

If it's a Toshiba laptop, Fn + F9 will toggle the touch pad on and off, at least on the several models I'm familiar with. If yours isn't a Toshiba, there might be some other function key combination that will do it.

If your touchpad is a Synaptics one, you can install the generic driver you can find on their site - that one has an option to disable the touchpad when the keyboard is active. (Pushed the wrong reply button - sorry!)
