    no, what I'm saying is set up like this boot0: cdrom boot1: hdd0 this way it will boot from cd if a bootable cd is in the drive, and when no bootable cd is present it will boot the os from the hd.

    This is called first, second and third boot device on my system. I also tried first boot - cd-rom second boot - hdd-0 and vice versa with and without inserted cd, but still the same message. Bunburry

      ...and I also know that this configuration works because Win2K was preinstalled by the dealer some hours ago and all OK. I just wanted to have more partitions by reinstalling windows. If only I had known this a little earlier I would have been satisfied with one... Bunburry

            First I installed 3 but when I saw the problems I deleted them and returned to 1. Without any effect. BTW: I am abstinent... Bunburry

Anyway, at first I thought you might be installing Windows on secondary partition, and some versions of windows need to be installed in primary partition. But AFAIK this is true for Win95/98 only. My suggestion would be: Get a Win95/98 startup disk. Use fdisk utilty to delete all partitions, format them all and try to reinstall Win2k. You might want to try to use "fdisk /mbr" as well which will restore Master Boot Record. Apart from this I have no idea.                       Are u sure that your hd partition is primary and then the flag is set to active? Fred Senior developer - C++/MFC/SQL
