    A friend just called me. He says, "I want to remove Vista and install XP. But I have SATA drives. The F6 driver works the first time (I have to use a USB floppy.) I get to the select partition screen, I select one, install, format and then I get asked for the driver again but now my USB drive isn't recognized. It also says uknown MBR." I don't have a clue. You guys ever seen this one? {SOLVED} Went into BIOS and changed drive from ACHI to ATA. No problems after that. :cool: {/SOLVED}

      I'm pretty sure the last SATA drive I installed XP on didn't require F6 and special drivers...

      ------------------------------------------- Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow; Don't walk behind me, I may not lead; Just bugger off and leave me alone!!

            Everything in my life has to be difficult! Buy a laptop for a client. Client doesn't like it. All sales were final. Stuck with laptop. Note: This is a totally unrelated laptop. If you remember my Dell ATG. Thing is bomb proof. Too ugly though. Female client wants pretty, trim, sophisticated. I'm thinking, "Hell with that. It's a jungle out there. Put on your Green Lanter Underoos, grab this beast of a machine and take it all head on." She says, "Return it I want something else... but I have to have it by Friday." :omg: then :wtf: and some :doh: with :suss:

              PC sales/supply... it's a mugs game... I try to avoid it best I can... (that being said I'm currently doing battle with a recalcitrant mouse for my longest (time) client).

                On those cases, here in Spain we (the ones that can sell computers) can buy them on the direct importers of that kind of material, they have special web pages that allow you to navigate through all this kind of equipment, you get a better price and moreover you get them directly by a courier without leaving your company. The guarantee is handled by the brand directly, so if you buy a computer from HP, then you have their direct guarantee. I'm buying equipment in Techdata [^] and in ingram micro[^]... Hope this helps.

                  Bash the laptop over the clients head, in fact next time let the client buy the laptop.

                    I have an arrangement with Dell. Works out very well for me to buy. In this case I even understood the risks and took them. My real laptop (4 years old, out of warranty) had died a few days ago and I kind of thought... "if this doesn't pan out then I've got a new rig" what I liked about that mindset is the laptop I'm stuck with is way less than what I would have bought price wise and it will work just fine. Of course it gets to sit on my account for a while as I slowly pay it down but... it's a small balance compared to what I would have spec'd out. My clients all sign a waiver that says they are responsible for all costs associated with blah, blah, blah. I could enforce this on her and Idaho Law is pretty rigid. I think in the end it will work out okay.

                      XP can't see SATA drives, but some motherboards have a IDE mode which makes the SATA drives appear as IDE drives, therefore works (this can be turned off by default). If your motherboard has not got this feature then you will have to use the drivers supplied by the harddisk manufacture (F6).
