Oh do you think so...? I better start backing it up now ....But how can hard drive fail in less than 2 yrs...I have formatted my system like 3-4 times since then. Oh you scared me now....all my project stuff is in this and i have not taken backup as of now...ill do it now.... Is there any way i could save it...if possible...? Or replacement would be the only option.. Thanks

If you haven't actually noticed read errors or odd crashes yet, then you might have some time left. Frequent backups are your friend if you do decide to risk it though. There's a reasonably good diagnostics disk that ships with Dell systems - after you run the backup, boot from that and let it hammer on the disk for a bit - if it doesn't find any problems, then you're probably in good shape for now.

is it ? Okay but i hate doing that... Reinstalling means...again installing XP prof - then all updates, VStudio, Eclipse, and lot of more softwares to install..It would easily take a day or two..oh it's a pain now..

Don't know why my laptop is making so much of processing noise these days. It is Inspiron 6000 Dell and only 2 yrs old. What could be the reason ? It is bit slow as well these day's. May be i need to increase RAM in it. But don't know if that would help in reducing this annoying noise ?

Run task manager and check that committed memory is well under the physical RAM. What can happen is that updates increase memory usage and eventually you start using virtual memory - you see slower performance and hear a lot of disk thrashing. If it is the problem it is easily solved by adding more RAM.

I have had the same type of problem with an older laptop. It ended up being the internal CPU fan it was not working well making noise and not doing it's job. So the CPU was heating up and the BIOS would slow doun the CPU clock rate so it could cool down. But since the fan was bad it just made the system perform poorly with a noise from the fan. It was also built into the custom heat sink so I could not replace it. It can still be the HD but check the CPU temp as well. Dan

I agree with professordan. Might be overheating or fan bearings.

ok you mean commit charge ...It is around 653M/1227M and total RAM in ma system is 512MB.... I guess i need to increase the RAM plus battery is completely dead in my system so i only use it with power. But that's nothing to do with this.. Thanks

If your commit charge is 653M and you only have 512M of RAM then your system will be continually swapping from RAM to HDD, it will be very slow and you will hear the HDD thrashing. Add more RAM. In the short term maybe you can delete some items from the startup to use less RAM and see if the noise stops. If it doesn't you should investigate further, and if you haven't backed up by now you should. The other things you can do to reduce the commit charge is to have fewer applications running at once and to not have multiple users logged on. If you can reduce your commit charge to less than the physical RAM you should see a major increase in speed. My experience is that automatic updates to the OS and security software seem to increase the RAM requirements (along with all those new programs you install), so a system that was OK a year ago may suddenly run out of physical RAM and start performing like a dog.

I had a slightly strange one with my inspiron - if the noise is the fan constantly running, then flip it over, and make sure that the cooling grilles aren't (as mine were :) )clogged up with dust....so clogged that I had to use a penknife to scrape it all out! Once I'd done that, it was quiet as a mouse....

ye it was clogged up with dust :) but still it's loud like earlier :( even after removing all the dust. And at the moment it's not even taking much RAM as commit charge is 450M and i have RAM about 512M. But still its giving me a heading.... Is it possible that there could be a dirt in fan ...Is it safe to open up the laptop and clean it or should i take this for servicing..? Thanks
