The New Mexico legislature has introduced a new tax measure, HB583, that would force consumers to pay a 1 percent excise tax on purchases of video games, gaming consoles, and TVs. [^] sending kids outside around here would probably lead to an increase in drive-by shootings and disappearances. X|

1% is such a big deal? In Ontario, Canada, provincial + federal tax is 15%. So if you see 200 dollar digital camera, it's actually 230 bucks. I freaked out the first week or so. And the next few weeks were rather unpleasant too. By the 3rd month or so I got used to it though. Ontario is where a Dollar store is really a Dollar and 15 cents store :-)

that's 1% in addition to existing sales tax (which in New Mexico is called a gross receipts tax and varies between 5.125% and 8% - a combination of all rates imposed by the state, counties and municipalities).

Welcome to Canada, eh? :) You shouldn't forget to mention that $50.00 of your $200.00 camera is embedded cost of fuel because gas is $5.00/Gallon...those shipping charges really add up.

Which is why it's worth really thinking about where to bring a family up - there's a lot besides the breadwinner's income to consider (which sadly seems to get forgotten a lot). It does seem rather unlikely though that such a tax (in isolation) will have much of a lifestyle effect for 21st century kids

I was thinking just that. I used to be a big fan of arcades when I was a kid. A month ago I was hit with nostalgia for playing games like Street Fighter 2 and the original Mortal Kombat.

I have great memories of passing the time at arcades after school, back in the '80s. MAME will let you play both of those, but there's still something about the bulky stand up machines, incessant noise and the smell of popcorn that will be missing. Defender, Joust and Robotron we're my favs, and who can forget Zaxon? I'm getting nostalgic now, might have to go download the latest version.... :-D

Oh man, the list of games is endless. Robotron rocked, but there were so many. Me being the geek and the nerd that I was back then, my money was split equally two ways. Part books and chemicals (I had a chemistry set and I almost became a chemist) and the other was spent against my mother and father's wishes at the local arcade. Honestly, the local arcade was the equivalent of Vegas for kids. But yeah, you're right, the whole atmosphere involved is just incredible. Good days :)

There is a company here in Brisbane that do the sit down table-top machines, including two egg-timer stools to sit on, for about $3500. They come pre-loaded with about 30 odd games, including Moon Patrol, Galaga, spacies, asteroids etc etc etc... I'm going to get one as soon as I have somewhere to stash it!! :-)

Sounds sick! I remember seeing some plans for a MAME console somewhere, but I think an old 80486, a few parts and some elbow grease would do the trick, instead of shelling out $3500. Of course the egg-timer stools would be sweet!

I saw that last week, and about two weeks before that they had D.A.R.Y.L.[^]. Both great movies, especially for the imaginative. I never knew about the oscar though. Interesting. I feel so... urged to play an arcade game now that I'm considering going out to actually find one and to play the game whatever it is!

Never thought about it that way before, but you're right on. You put your money in and never see it again. :) Just watched WarGames the other night (it won an oscar, which I never knew), and totally forgot about Galaga and Galaxian and those flying bug games that drove me mad. Definitely good days!

Never seen DARYL, I'll have to check that out. Not sure if WarGames won anything, but was nominated for writing, cinematography and sound. (Made it to the 31 days of Oscar on TCM, which the wife makes me watch :-)). Doesn't sound like it's going to be a good day for you. Hope all goes well with your hearing and root canals. Visualizing the video games of yore might take your mind off of the pain. Good luck!

my favorite was a karate game, mild by todays standards, but I held the #1 record in Tulsa oklahoma... playing on one quarter for hours. I used to gather crowds around me sometimes when I tried to break my own record, kids would wander in and see where I was at. It was also entertaining because when finished, or starting, I would bow to the machine. At the end I would always bow and say "domo origato." Hehehe I still remember one saturday morning I was particularly bored and came in early to set the record... drew a crowd of kids as word got out, shattered my record by another 50% above. I bowed to the machine as always thanked it. As I was leaving a real young kid, 10 at most probably closer to 8, asked me, "Are you a ninja?" I knelt down so I could look him eye-to eye and said seriously, "If I said 'yes' you would know right away that I was not. If I answered 'no' you would still always wonder. Therefore in truth your question cannot be answered truthfully." or something to that extent, and wished him a good day. As I was leaving I heard the crowd of kids whispering loudly, "he is a ninja!"  Now if they had seen me in my black Gi knocking fences down at work with karate strikes, they might have come to the same conclusions... but no, I am not a ninja... ;P

The New Mexico legislature has introduced a new tax measure, HB583, that would force consumers to pay a 1 percent excise tax on purchases of video games, gaming consoles, and TVs. [^] sending kids outside around here would probably lead to an increase in drive-by shootings and disappearances. X|

Is it bypassable if you order from Amazon.com or the likes of it?
