anyone can recommend sparkling sweet wine that is strong enough to knock me out? i find most of them are light alcohol-wise. I'm not really a wine connosseur (sorry for the spelling) and i don't like the bitter taste. from time to time when doing development early evenings my brain couldn't stop working and is still in sixth gear even when i alreadu want to sleep.

Perhaps Port? That's stronger than wine (~20%), and it's pretty sweet. It's not sparkling, but I'm sure you could run it through a SodaStream :-D

You might want to try a spritzer with a fortified wine instead of regular wine which from what I know, rarely goes over 15% Back in college, I used to down Vodka Currant & 7-Up like mad. Sweet like candy and smooth like silk once you get the portions right.

A rich fruity full bodied red, chianti for example, a bottle and a half should send you to sleep nicely, but keep water by the bed for the morning! :-D

Wouldn't one of the "drowsy" teas, like chamomile, work better? I'd personally be a bit nervous about relying on alcohol to help me fall asleep.

The closest you are going to get is Champagne. You'll sleep like a baby.

Vodka, 50%, Passion Fruit juice 50% at the end of the day before bed, then yelling and screaming kids and crashing servers are but a distant memory. Not wine, but effective.

I started that way... the wine made me drousy, but eventually the tollerance was high enough that two bottles wouldn't cut it and I had to move on to stronger things. I settled on black label whiskey eventually... but when three pints of that isn't doing the trick, it's time to forget the alcohol. :-D

Chamomile makes you drowsy? really? I'm a big one for herbal teas, but never knew that chamomile can make you sleepy. But I'll tell you, when I used to drink alcohol more often, I used to be less tense. Much less. I'm not saying its a good habit, just remembering days when I was more mellow.

Valerian Root tea[^] is better. chamomile never seemed to help me. Of course there is the slight problem that valerian root is a poison in high dosages... but then so is coke and we drink it, right?

some people, it never did for me. but there are still other teas that do. If one doesn't work, you find one that does.

I was thinking that. Chamomile never really did it for me. My favs are Sage when I've got an upset stomach or acid and a mixed flower bud tea that's awesome for relaxation. There is also this plant named "Melissa[^]" that is a magic cure for headaches. I'll see if I can get Valerian root locally. What else do you enjoy of the herbal teas?

I think any wine can do that. The question is: how much you need :-)

Mad Dog 20/20 or some Night Train mixed with a little club soda for the sparkle. Or go the pro route with a bottle of NyQuil to give you some of them NyQuil Blues...

Lambrusco mixed with a dash of Vodka might do the trick.

Well sure! But then you're relying on alcohol to make you less tense, right?! Since my grandma was an alcoholic I'm a little paranoid about using alcohol to often. There used to be a saying that alcoholism skipped a generation (I have no idea whether or not it's true), and I guess I always figured why tempt fate. Plus, in my case, living with three Polish women, I have *plenty* of incentive to hit the vodka on a nightly basis, so I try and avoid that :)

Valerian Root tea[^] is better. chamomile never seemed to help me. Of course there is the slight problem that valerian root is a poison in high dosages... but then so is coke and we drink it, right?

Additionally, noone knows how valerian root works exactly. They are only making educated guesses. However, it works on most people, but usually requires that you take it regularly. As to the poison: "Dosis sola venenum facit.", as Paracelsus said. Everything is toxic in high enough doses.

I trimmed down my collection significantly I used to have about two dozen drinking teas, probably more, and a little fewer than a dozen medicinal teas. With a child in the house now it is not safe to keep something like Valerian root and some of the others, so most of the medicinal teas are gone. We were so cramped in the rental I had to get rid of a lot so just my favorites, mostly Chai blends, are on the shelf. I enjoy many of the herbals at different times.

some people, it never did for me. but there are still other teas that do. If one doesn't work, you find one that does.

No, it's the opposite. You need to find one that doesn't do any work. The ones who are working are unlikely feeling drowsy.
