I started that way... the wine made me drousy, but eventually the tollerance was high enough that two bottles wouldn't cut it and I had to move on to stronger things. I settled on black label whiskey eventually... but when three pints of that isn't doing the trick, it's time to forget the alcohol. :-D

After 3 pints of whiskey, I imagine you forget most things!

No, it's the opposite. You need to find one that doesn't do any work. The ones who are working are unlikely feeling drowsy.

Well sure! But then you're relying on alcohol to make you less tense, right?! Since my grandma was an alcoholic I'm a little paranoid about using alcohol to often. There used to be a saying that alcoholism skipped a generation (I have no idea whether or not it's true), and I guess I always figured why tempt fate. Plus, in my case, living with three Polish women, I have *plenty* of incentive to hit the vodka on a nightly basis, so I try and avoid that :)

Wow, you did that without any help from alcohol? :-D Note: I have no idea what I am talking about (including both Polish women and alcohol).

Lambrusco mixed with a dash of Vodka might do the trick.

wine rarely breaks 15%. and i doubt it can even be called "wine" if it breaks 18 or 20%. if you want high alcohol, sweet, and bubbly, try a vodka, juice & soda. orange and cranberry juices work well here. or gin, juice & soda. or gin & tonic. or gin & vermouth (=martini).

I can't sleep on alcohol unless I have a very large amount, but even then I wake up early, like 04h00, as soon as it wears off enough. Then I have a very unpleasant next few hours tossing, turning, and sweating.

A rich fruity full bodied red, chianti for example, a bottle and a half should send you to sleep nicely, but keep water by the bed for the morning! :-D

One and a half bottles (750 + 375ml) of 12.5% wine is 14 units! You're not supposed to drink more than about 3 to 4 units per day and you're supposed not to drink more than 21 units a week.

unfortunately NOT which is why I gave it up. When seeking an answer to a problem in a bottle, eventually you realize the answer isn't there.... So I threw away my last bottle, divorced my wife, and haven't touched the stuff since... much to the ribbing of my second wife.

anyone can recommend sparkling sweet wine that is strong enough to knock me out? i find most of them are light alcohol-wise. I'm not really a wine connosseur (sorry for the spelling) and i don't like the bitter taste. from time to time when doing development early evenings my brain couldn't stop working and is still in sixth gear even when i alreadu want to sleep.

Get a bottle of Mogen-David MD20-20 (aka Mad Dog 20-20) and a straw. Blow bubbles in it with the straw and chug quickly. Goodnight....

sparkling sweet wine? Ugg. Try Port, it's sweet and it's tasty. Also try getting an hour of hard excercise daily and you won't find any problem's going to sleep.
