Are they giving away VS2008 Standard Edition at these events?

"...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001They don't really say... At the "install fest" events in December, they were giving away VS 2008 Pro. On the plus side, Silverlight is free  (OT, yes, but the annoying popups are, well, annoying...)

John, I'm only gonna stop once you start using it. ;-) Besides, I wrote a little addition that shows a CPhog icon next to each user who posts using CPhog. So it makes it really easy to see who's not using it. ;P

Hi, my name is John and I want to talk to you about CPHog and how it changed my life.

I honestly have no good reason to use firefox. Sure it works fine, but IE is already pre-installed and works fine and has all my links and history in it. If anything I'd use Opera which *does* have compelling reasons to use it over IE so if you want to get a cphog for Opera I might use it. :)

"...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001I got an MS email a few weeks back and, if I recall right, they said they'll be giving away free copies of VS 2008 Standard or Pro. Just did a search and got this hit[^] which seems to confirm it.

I took at look at it just now. The problem with Opera is that its JavaScript support lags behind by a lot. So things that are standardized, like iterators and generators, and certain generic array-like functions that have been in Firefox since 1.5 and 2 that still aren't in Opera. I can manage to get it to load the script, but it errors out as soon as it starts hitting foreach-style loops. And we've got lots of those, since the primary function of CPhog is manipulating the CP forum DOM and adding to it, which means iterating over all the posts on the page... Translation: Unless we get a huge re-write to move backwards in JavaScript functionality, it's probably not going to happen.

Heh. Nah, I'm not going to harass anybody into using it. I honestly am pretty content with the user base we've got. They're pretty vocal about the things they don't like (Take, for instance, my totalitarian decision to move that orange bar on your left over to the right side of all the page content. That got a ton of backlash. ;P) and they're pretty helpful with error reports and finding things that are wrong. My goal is really just to give people better tools for posting here at CodeProject. The old way of clicking reply, waiting for another page to load, typing into a standard textarea field, clicking submit, refreshing the browser to see your changes just seems so inefficient. Not only does CPhog put a small reply form right underneath the post you're replying to, you don't have to load any more pages to see your changes. They get added to the page you're already viewing. And thanks to the QuickRefresh functionality Josh added, new posts get added to the page in the background, so you could literally go a whole day without manually refreshing a CP page. My favorite part has to be the keyboard navigation of the forums...but Chris liked that idea too and stole it from us. ;)

*edit* I can't read hehe Anyway, where was "pro" mentioned? All the official press I can find states "...a version of...". Mark

"...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001It states at the bottom of this page:[^]
Product giveaway kit good only for attendees of 2008 Launch Wave event, events that are targeted towards IT professionals. Limit one launch giveaway kit per person. All kits must be claimed at the event. This offer is non-transferrable and expires on June 30, 2008 while supplies last. Offer is not redeemable for cash. Taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the recipient.
So they must be giving something out.

I'm not sure pro was mentioned; recalling this weeks-old email entirely from memory. :)

Nice. ;) There's a ton of cool features, if I do say so myself. Randomized signatures, a rich text editor, in-page replies, moving that sidebar off to the right. ;P You should take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the keyboard shortcuts, they're totally worth learning. :-D (Click on the little greasebob in the lower right to get a list of 'em.)
