*edit* I can't read hehe Anyway, where was "pro" mentioned? All the official press I can find states "...a version of...". Mark

I'm not sure pro was mentioned; recalling this weeks-old email entirely from memory. :)

Are they giving away VS2008 Standard Edition at these events?

The Australian version offers: "full operating copy of Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 CTP5 and Visual Studio Team System 2008 (90-day trial version) *ERP/RRP as valued by Microsoft. Launch Kit contents are subject to change. " From http://www.microsoft.com/australia/heroes/[^]

Heh. Nah, I'm not going to harass anybody into using it. I honestly am pretty content with the user base we've got. They're pretty vocal about the things they don't like (Take, for instance, my totalitarian decision to move that orange bar on your left over to the right side of all the page content. That got a ton of backlash. ;P) and they're pretty helpful with error reports and finding things that are wrong. My goal is really just to give people better tools for posting here at CodeProject. The old way of clicking reply, waiting for another page to load, typing into a standard textarea field, clicking submit, refreshing the browser to see your changes just seems so inefficient. Not only does CPhog put a small reply form right underneath the post you're replying to, you don't have to load any more pages to see your changes. They get added to the page you're already viewing. And thanks to the QuickRefresh functionality Josh added, new posts get added to the page in the background, so you could literally go a whole day without manually refreshing a CP page. My favorite part has to be the keyboard navigation of the forums...but Chris liked that idea too and stole it from us. ;)

Nice. ;) There's a ton of cool features, if I do say so myself. Randomized signatures, a rich text editor, in-page replies, moving that sidebar off to the right. ;P You should take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the keyboard shortcuts, they're totally worth learning. :-D (Click on the little greasebob in the lower right to get a list of 'em.)

John, you use Firefox, don't you? If so, is there a reason you're not using CPhog[^]? I'll accept "I didn't know about it." as a valid answer...but anything else is pretty much unacceptable. ;)

I don't generally do plug-ins. Nothing personal, just standard practice at my house and at work.

I got an MS email a few weeks back and, if I recall right, they said they'll be giving away free copies of VS 2008 Standard or Pro. Just did a search and got this hit[^] which seems to confirm it.

The last time it was the Standard. Anyway, I clearly recall that here in Italy they give 2008 Standard.

At the HeroesHappenHere Launch tour from Microsoft, I am under the impression that all attendees will receive a kit with copies of Visual Studio 2008, Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. Free copies of all 3 programs, however I am not sure which VS it will be. For the Office/Vista/ExchangeServer launch they gave away Office 2007 Pro Plus.

Actually, it was the 90-day trial disk, with a registration number that you plugged in to get the real pro disk when they were launched by sometime in February. BTW - know when those real disks will be shipped? Thanks!

Yes they are. I e-mailed Chris Bowen, who gives these presentations for Microsoft, and he said: I’ve heard there will be some combination of full packaged (not for resale) product (VS2008 Standard), CTP/RTM versions of product, and vouchers for final bits of SQL Server and Windows 2008. The Windows Server bits will apparently be for testing/evaluation only, and I’m not sure about the SQL bits. I plan to attend and get a free copy of VS2008, as I did several years ago when I got my free copy of VS2005. It's a terrific deal! :-D
