*This is computer related, but definitely worth sharing here. This little conversation between me and a friend of mine (who is a J2EE struts programmer, yes) should be entertaining. I urge you to read the whole thing* Dude: What are you doing? Me: Learning some basic javascript. Dude: Cool. So what does this stuff do? Me: It's a textbox with a button next to it. Write something, click the button, and it gets copied to the clipboard. Dude: Sounds nice. Show me? Me: Sure So, I write Hello World into the text box, click the button, the text gets copied to the clipboard. I open the run dialog, do a ctrl+v and the text gets pasted. Yay! But my dear friend is unimpressed. Dude: It didn't work. Me: (bewildered)What????? How???? Dude: Where's the clipboard? Me: What clipboard? Dude: You said it will copy the text to a clipboard. But it didn't? Me: Are you kidding? I just pasted the text into the run dialog! Didn't you notice? Here, I show him again, step by step, by changing the text to "Notice Carefully". Everything works out fine as usual. I repeat 3 more times with different texts, and everything is good. Dude: (unamused) See, it isn't working. Now I started digging deeper. Seeing the guy completely serious and unamused, I asked: Me: What didn't work? Dude: The clipboard. It's not there? Me: Ok, you tell me.....where should it be? Dude: On the side I guess? Haven't you seen it in Word and Excel? Me: .................... ........ What? Are you serious or joking? Dude: Why? Isn't that how the clipboard works? It's not showing on your webpage. Me: (almost in tears) Microsoft........I have a score to settle with you. Dude: (still unconvinced, unamused). In Word and Excel, it shows on the side with the item on top and many previous items below it. Me: (hopelessly) Thanks for the information, enlightening. Do you understand what the windows clipboard is? Dude: (suspicious now) What windows clipboard? Windows........clipboard? Me: (I'm trying my best to keep cool and clam). Have you ever copy pasted text in applications other than Word/Excel and other office tools? Dude: (thinks hard) Me: No? Dude: (Still thinking hard, and not willing to agree) Me: Notepad? Wordpad? Run Dialog? Internet Explorer? Dude: (completely reluctant to agree) So? Me: So how did text get copy pasted in those applications? Dude: I don't know........I'm confused. But your page isn't working. Me: (in a state of controlled rage) Ok, I'll try to make it work. Thanks. Is there anythi

Did you try using Clipboard Viewer (clipbrd.exe)? Source: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/tips/nebeker1.mspx[^] This should have been posted in Lounge itself and not in Soapbox.

I think there's a deeper meaning here: you failed at the "managing the user expectations" part. Every developer fails at it. I do fail at it every day. The worst part is when the "user" is my manager. Ultimately, I think we can't avoid failing in this thing, once in a while. "Managing the user expectations" is another way of saying "expect stupidity beyond your expectations".

Good point and agreed. But would I be over-expecting if I assumed that a J2EE professional, dealing with struts, who has a degree in programming and basic computing, would know what the windows clipboard is and how it's different from the stack that office uses? I would have understood if it was a real user at the other end, but like I said, this guy himself is a programmer. So this was more than unexpected. My kid sis (does those terrible myspace like webpages) was able to figure the scenario and laughed her head off. :-\

Yup! I had a bit myopic view. Instead of seeing the caption as Soapbox, I saw it as Lounge. ;P ;)
