Vista SP1

Just a quick notice, in case you were searching for some first-hand news about this. I downloaded SP1 from MSDN, installed it on my x86 notebook and x64 desktop, and it went fine in both cases. On the desktop, it replaced the audio card driver (Realtek) automatically, and I had no problems whatsoever. All applications and hardware seem to work fine, including VS05 and 08. I still have to notice the differences, but there's time for that.
If you truly believe you need to pick a mobile phone that "says something" about your personality, don't bother. You don't have a personality. A mental illness, maybe - but not a personality. - Charlie Brooker My Photos/CP Flickr Group - ScrewTurn Wiki

The x86 install went fine on my notebook as well. One thing puzzled me. I started with about 9GB of disk space free, and after the install was completed, I now have 30GB free. Where did it reclaim 20GB??? Marc

Probably it cleaned out a shadow copy.

A similar thing happened to me but I had to remove the Portuguese language pack before SP1 would install. In my case it freed aroung 8 GB.

Personally, for me it kept failing to install after several reboots... would just keep rolling back. I took it as an opportunity to do a clean install, something I've been wanting to do for some time now anyway. Post clean-install, update to SP1 everything is humming along great, including my games, VS.NET 2008, all my hardware, etc.

No idea. I don't have any XP box around.

yes, by a large amount. Benchmarks still show XP as being somewhat faster but it turns out the numbers aren't directly comparable. XP shows a copy as complete once the last of the file has been written into the disk cache. Vista waits until the cache has been flushed before it's done.
Otherwise [Microsoft is] toast in the long term no matter how much money they've got. They would be already if the Linux community didn't have it's head so firmly up it's own command line buffer that it looks like taking 15 years to find the desktop. -- Matthew Faithfull
