Despite the fact that I bought into HD-DVD, and wish this hadn't happened, Toshiba has earned a lot of respect from me for putting the consumer ahead of it's own profit margins (even if it was a secondary or even tertiary concern). I don't think Sony would have done the same thing if the positions were reversed. Ah well, by the time Blu-ray players (and the media) is actually affordable, everyone will be streaming HD content and the players won't be needed at all.

Well thats one less decision I'll have to make when or if my 12 year old tv or my 7 year old dvd player stops working.

I don't think the markets are ready for that. The paramount boss (or paramount Germany? I'm not sure) argued today that while there's high broadband penetration, "broadband" is anything starting at 384k/s. For decent HD streaming you need a steady 50MBit at least. Also, broadband penetraiton isn't that high in rural areas here than it's in the US. I'd also add a few other things: First, to many people are happy watching ad-funded free crap, rather than paying a monthly fee. They would have to pay for high end broadband PLUS the fees for the videos on demand. Also, rates for current broadbad access have been dropping steeply, so that investments into new technology will take a few years to recoup. I expect it to take another few years - and maybe an "emerging nation" without an existing infrastructure will be much faster.
