I'm thinking of getting a little point and shoot camera to carry around when out and about with the kids. We're often on the beach (almost daily) and Mikey, nearly 3, loves everything to do with marine life. So I'm thinking of getting one of those P&S's which are waterproof to 5 metres (I doubt we'll need more than that till the kids are older, by which time we'd probably want to upgrade anyway). Any suggestions?

FYI water resistance is measured in static pressure, not dynamic. 5m water resistance means that if you put a camera at the bottom of a 5m box and filled it without splashing the camera wouldn't leak. It doesn't mean you could use the camera for skin diving to 5m, because the dynamic pressure as it moved against the water is much higher. 5m only protects against an occasional splash. To actually use it while in the water floating you'd need 50m resistance, and significantly more if doing any sort of skin diving.

Otherwise [Microsoft is] toast in the long term no matter how much money they've got. They would be already if the Linux community didn't have it's head so firmly up it's own command line buffer that it looks like taking 15 years to find the desktop. -- Matthew Faithfull

when dealing with water proofing... always get twice as much as you need. Personally, I would get a waterproof case for the real deal. Why? because they can be sealed, and you can see a leak and get up to the surface ASAP. But I have never actually tried underwater photography. I am a cave dweller myself. ;) anyhow, play it safe, get twice as good of water protection as you will ever need. If you go to 5m depth, make sure the camera will survive to 10m.

While maybe a little expensive, the Pentax Optio W30 is on my shortlist for the next camera I buy. While looking on Amazon, I ran across the Vivitar 6200W, which is cheaper and looks more rugged.
