Bic lighters and 9-11
-
What Does a 99-cent Bic Lighter Tell Us About the Bush War on Terrorism?. "why is the one device [a butane lighter] that has been used to try and blow up a plane since 9-11 NOT on the banned list? No one has used toenail clippers to kill anyone on Jet Blue, and no one has been blowing away the leaves in the aisle of the Delta Connection flight to Tupelo." "The butane lighters were on the original list prepared by the FAA and sent to the White House for approval. The tobacco industry lobbied the Bush administration to have the lighters and matches removed from the banned list. Their customers (addicts) naturally are desperate to light up as soon as they land, and why should they be punished just so the skies can be safe?"

They're not nearly as dangerous as pens or sharpened pencils. Perhaps we should ban pens and pencils on flights? Come to think of it, a glass lense could be broken and used as a weapon of terror (!!!). We should ban glasses on flights, too. That is, unless the Big Glasses industry buys someone at the FAA. Let's sit down and come up with all the horrible things that can be done with otherwise ordinary objects, and ban those ordinary objects on flights. We'll spend every cent and bit of energy in an attempt to defend every possible permutation of attack possiblities, and of course blame a big company or white guy when we find a shortcoming. In all seriousness, the funniest part about that web page is that he accuses GW of taking advantage of a panic-striken public right after he asks whether or not there actually is a 'terrorist threat' or whether it is all just a vast conspiracy concocted by the G.W. Cabal to take control of the US and destroy our Constitution. Oh, and the part about using the lighter to murder 200 people - I'll assume that was the one where the guy was trying to light some EXPLOSIVES in his shoe. We'll focus the lighter being the dangerous ingredient, not the EXPLOSIVES, and certainly not the guy that tried to do it. It was the fault of whoever allowed people to carry lighters onto planes. I've run across this guy before (he used to have a show on TV in the US for a little while). He's a decent comedian/commentator with a holier-than-thou complex that's almost as big as the chip on his shoulder. I've always thought of him as a lot more Howard Stern than he is Noam Chomsky. -- Russell Morris "WOW! Chocolate - half price!" - Homer Simpson, while in the land of chocolate.
