I'm with you there, I only run Vista for testing.

Yeah, Vista made my old notebook unusable.

My notebook isn't noticeably slower under Vista. I was forced into Vista, as XP crashed and burned, and I really needed to get my notebook up, and I could only find a Vista install at work, so I went with it, expecting worse, and expecting to revert back to XP before I installed to much further that VS 2008. I haven't had reason to go back yet though.

Yeah, the improved stuff is like someone trying to put frosting on a shoe. That initial taste hits all the "sweet" sense, but then it feels like I'm chewing on smelly old leather. Marc

There's ya problem.  I've said it many times here but on my desktop Vista runs much faster than XP Pro did and it's running new hardware that exceeds the specs of Vista.  For example the current Experience Index is 4.9 but that's because I've got a slower hard-drive in at the moment, on my previous setup I had a faster hard drive and it was rated at 5.2.  XP didn't come close in terms of speed. Oh forgot to mention this is tha x64 edition of Vista which seems to be much better than the x86 from what people have said.  If someone's willing to send me the x86 install disk (only have x64) then I'd be willing to try it out to see how it goes...

yup yup i got it from my friend at MS over xmas when i was in seattle ... its not so much the speed issues (altho seeing how xp runs i suddenly realise i want that fast) but more the inability to do things i need to do because of the heavy handed security for example ... i connect my MS smartfone running wm6 and i cant do anything in the windows folder of the fone from the mobile device center (replaces activesync) ... it doesnt allow me to even create a shortcut to a new app many other small things like that make it just not worth the grief for me for the amount of time i use windows these days ... plus i think the aero glass looks hideous i'll wait with xp until win7 comes out and hopefully fixes what is wrong with vista by being basically what vista should have been i think it happens every so often ... you buy something like a car or a computer or a fone or something that is just a complete lemon and never works right ... this is one of those "drop the ball" moments for MS ... they will fix it next time im sure

I've heard from quite a few people that 64bit Vista runs much better then 32bit vista. I'd be surprised if it was possible for it to run worse.

My guess is that you didn't give it enough RAM, or had a very slow hard disk (some older laptops have very slow hard drives) or your video card wasn't fast enough. I have 4GB in my machine, and while I can tell the difference between XP and Vista, it's not that noticable. Spend the $100 to add 2GB of memory or more and you'll be a lot happier with it.

-- Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?

That is I think the deciding factor, the problem people seem to have had is drivers for x64. However I ran a trial of Vista for 120 days and worked out all the driver issues within a week or two. One is still unresolved, the wireless card but seeing as this is a desktop it doesn't really matter.

Odd, similar specs to my desktop: 2GB Ram, 378MB nVidia 8800GTS, AMD X2 (dual core) 3800+, 1.25TB+ between two disks (7200 SATA & IDE).

Same here. I recently bought a new box, and toyed with the idea of popping in my XP disc for the first run, but finally allowed the Vista OEM to install itself. I've not had a problem with it (note: I immediately switched over to "Windows Classic", which is likely to have made quite a bit of difference). I confess that surprised me -- after the "wow experience" of using Office 2007 (now downgraded back to Office 2003), I was expecting Vista to be the same kind of pain in the backside. I tell a lie, I did have one problem: Alcohol 120% (the application, not the vodka) black-screened the machine (the vodka only black-screens me), and prevented the OS from booting fully, as it resumed its installation on boot, but booting to safe DOS mode immediately gave me the option to roll back to before the install started (that's a lot easier than chasing up Windows Restore in XP DOS). And the memory management seems to actually work -- something that MS hasn't been able to claim credit for since EMM386 (and then it was only because it was so user-configurable). And it goes like sh1t off a shovel. I'm tempted to buy another, identical, box, just to see how XP runs on it.

Just installed Daemon Tools Lite and they work well.

I have been a fan of Windows for years. I had a great time when beta testing Windows 95. Now I've no idea what happened with Vista but I've tried to stick to it however I think I'm gunna have to give up. I've installed SP1 in the hope the thing would improve but I'm out of luck. The one major stumbling block I have is sleep mode. It sure puts it to sleep alright only to not be able to wake it up!!! I've tried latest BIOS updates, windows updates, Video Updates (NVidia) even reinstalling it. All to no avail. It is a real pain!! Even simple things like the standard photo viewer is horrible in full screen view. Photography is my passion. Vista brags about how photo aware it is but then Bill drops in a dog of a viewer. The photo's look great on my 30" Dell when in Windowed mode but when switched to full screen mode the resolution drops dramatically ... sheeze it ain't hard is it? Put simply I can't see any real advantage over XP except for Chip and PC manufacturers. All the orginal neat features like genuine multi-user etc was dropped leaving only what seems to be a dressed up GUI. Have you ever run Windows 98SE on one of your machines? You have to wonder if we are going backwards rather than forwards at all!!! I simply could not recommend this version of Windows to anyone.
