There's ya problem. I've said it many times here but on my desktop Vista runs much faster than XP Pro did and it's running new hardware that exceeds the specs of Vista. For example the current Experience Index is 4.9 but that's because I've got a slower hard-drive in at the moment, on my previous setup I had a faster hard drive and it was rated at 5.2. XP didn't come close in terms of speed. Oh forgot to mention this is tha x64 edition of Vista which seems to be much better than the x86 from what people have said. If someone's willing to send me the x86 install disk (only have x64) then I'd be willing to try it out to see how it goes...
well the laptop in question has 2gb ram + 256md nvidia graphics card + dual core 2ghz + 200gb 7200rpm sata hdd not sure that should be affected so badly by vista ... clean install not upgraded ... vista ultimate ... all the latest drivers xp literally flies on the same box ... so fast that often i find myself doing things twice as i think it didnt happen the first time

I've heard from quite a few people that 64bit Vista runs much better then 32bit vista. I'd be surprised if it was possible for it to run worse.

My guess is that you didn't give it enough RAM, or had a very slow hard disk (some older laptops have very slow hard drives) or your video card wasn't fast enough. I have 4GB in my machine, and while I can tell the difference between XP and Vista, it's not that noticable. Spend the $100 to add 2GB of memory or more and you'll be a lot happier with it.

That is I think the deciding factor, the problem people seem to have had is drivers for x64. However I ran a trial of Vista for 120 days and worked out all the driver issues within a week or two. One is still unresolved, the wireless card but seeing as this is a desktop it doesn't really matter.

Same here. I recently bought a new box, and toyed with the idea of popping in my XP disc for the first run, but finally allowed the Vista OEM to install itself. I've not had a problem with it (note: I immediately switched over to "Windows Classic", which is likely to have made quite a bit of difference). I confess that surprised me -- after the "wow experience" of using Office 2007 (now downgraded back to Office 2003), I was expecting Vista to be the same kind of pain in the backside. I tell a lie, I did have one problem: Alcohol 120% (the application, not the vodka) black-screened the machine (the vodka only black-screens me), and prevented the OS from booting fully, as it resumed its installation on boot, but booting to safe DOS mode immediately gave me the option to roll back to before the install started (that's a lot easier than chasing up Windows Restore in XP DOS). And the memory management seems to actually work -- something that MS hasn't been able to claim credit for since EMM386 (and then it was only because it was so user-configurable). And it goes like sh1t off a shovel. I'm tempted to buy another, identical, box, just to see how XP runs on it.

I have been a fan of Windows for years. I had a great time when beta testing Windows 95. Now I've no idea what happened with Vista but I've tried to stick to it however I think I'm gunna have to give up. I've installed SP1 in the hope the thing would improve but I'm out of luck. The one major stumbling block I have is sleep mode. It sure puts it to sleep alright only to not be able to wake it up!!! I've tried latest BIOS updates, windows updates, Video Updates (NVidia) even reinstalling it. All to no avail. It is a real pain!! Even simple things like the standard photo viewer is horrible in full screen view. Photography is my passion. Vista brags about how photo aware it is but then Bill drops in a dog of a viewer. The photo's look great on my 30" Dell when in Windowed mode but when switched to full screen mode the resolution drops dramatically ... sheeze it ain't hard is it? Put simply I can't see any real advantage over XP except for Chip and PC manufacturers. All the orginal neat features like genuine multi-user etc was dropped leaving only what seems to be a dressed up GUI. Have you ever run Windows 98SE on one of your machines? You have to wonder if we are going backwards rather than forwards at all!!! I simply could not recommend this version of Windows to anyone.

yeah thats what happened to me essentially ... i tried my best to use it and like it but after 3 months of feeling like it was fighting me at every step of the way i just gave up and put xp back on as my windows os and im soooooooooo much happier ... stuff just works ive said before that i really and truly think that vista is another ME and will be largely forgotten and not talked about once the next version (which is what vista should have been) comes out shame really
