I just checked. Marc W Miller who designed Traveler is apparently still alive although I couldn't any recent references to him on the web.

and I thought I was the only one that played AD&D and Traveller. There were many an assembly that a handfull of us spent at the top of the bleachers playing traveller instead of watching the football players brag about what they were finally going to do that no other team from our school had ever done before...

I still have the original Dungeon Masters Guide book, with the original art work cover, sitting on my book shelf (looking rather, uh, used). Since the day I obtained that book, I have never viewed dice the same way ... Gary, thank you for creating an entire Universe of fun, wonder and adventure.

I know I was hooked the first time I played the game using nothing but the 3 book set, handful of dice and graph paper in Hawaii in 1976. What a blast that was, six of us computer geeks sitting in a living room for 20+ hours straight on weekends, arguing about the damage a dwarf should really have. Now, we play WOW, GuildWars, ..., etc and think nothing of the skill required to create the world we play in. We whine and complain about the people we play with around the world, thinking nothing of the people who started it all. God speed Gary, hope the 20's keep rolling.

My brother had dyslexia, hated to read and was failing school because of it. Some cousins, friends and myself were into D&D, we played ever so often and my brother always wanted to play. But he did not know the rules. So i gave him a players manual from one of the box games told him to read it and then he could play. He pestered anyone he could to help him read the manual. And when we got in from school he would study the manual like it was for a test. Once he had all the rules down he was better at keeping up with all the stats than I could, did i mention even though he could not read good because of the dyslexia, for his age he was an absolute genius with numbers. Try running a game with a 9 year old correcting your math. I always said my brother taught himself to read and work around the dyslexia, even when the school system would not help him. My brother just says that Gary Gayax taught him to read. :rose:

I have many fond memories of the time I and my friends played D&D - and became more complete people for it. Once cracked, the floodgates opened and we discovered curiosity, imagination, confidence and decision. I'm a better person for the game and I would say ultimately it is due to the man who created and nurtured the game for so long.
