At least, I've seen the light, thanks to Robert Edward Caldecott for guiding me to WTL. I've successfully converted a network client application with hi graphics presentation to WTL. Bliss utter bliss! :-D Normski. - Professional Windows Programmer

I would like to be an WTL convert, as I believe it to be a superior technology. But here is what stops me: There is nothing in MSDN on WTL. Therefore, it is obviously unsupported. If I spend time developing software with MFC and run into a problem I can go to my boss and say "There is a problem with MFC, I will go to the documentation and figure it out". He will say "OK" If I spend time developing the same application with WTL and run into a problem I will go to my boss and say "There is a problem with WTL". He will say "So, go to MSDN and figure out how to fix it". I will say "Can't, it is not supported". He will say "You spent all this time developing with a systems that is not supported". I will say "Yes". He will say "Your fired". "Humans: The final chapter in the evolution of rats"

The Rev. I too was concerned about the *unsupported* issue. Looking at WTL7.0 now, it's come along way since Version 3.0. There are plenty of net articles/sites covering WTL. I think the main qualifications are good C++ and Base windows programming. I can see WTL actually replacing MFC in the long term. WTL is definitely clear and concise. Don't forget that it is only a collection of header files - any bugs can be easily fixed. I keep a copy of WTL7 in our main CVS repository so I can easily apply any fixes and have all dependent products updated immediately. I tried fixing some problems in MFC7 recently - HA! Compiling a new version of MFC (yes, I was that desperate :() is no fun. MFC is on its last legs - v7 has been a nightmare for me so far and has made me realise how much easier WTL is once you have gained some experience (I started by converting some small dialog-based MFC apps of mine - an excellent way to get started). BTW, The Yahoo group is an excellent source for support - if you convert, you will not be alone!

Compiling MFC, jeez that's bad - real bad. I would love to see full WTL support for MFC classes, eg. CMutex etc. maybe the next release of WTL will have classes that mirror MFC so that MFC->WTL migration is simple. Oh and BTW Robert cheers *showing me the light* I need to move away from MFC, I been using it for far too long and know far too much, I need to focus my energies on more ATL/WTL. and praise the lord, I'll be attending the Church on a daily baises. I Need to port a whole lot of MFC stuff over to WTL, that should keep me busy for a while. :) On another note; Why don't M$ host a WTL newsgroup it would be better than hosting it in yahoo groups :~ Normski. - Professional Windows Programmer

Welcome!!!! Hehe, I was there when you posted that you were a newbie to the WTL user group. I remember one guy mocking you. Imagine, Norm Almond a newbie at anything C++ related! :-) I'm also just finishing up a WTL app that looks like it will be responsible for saving me my job. How's that for WTL bliss? I'm just glad another CP regular is joining the club!! ;P ;P ;P Senkwe And when God, who created the entire universe with all of its glories, decides to deliver a message to humanity, He WILL NOT use, as His messenger, a person on cable TV with a bad hairstyle.

Senkwe My only fustration with WTL is all the MFC utility classes are missing such as CFile etc. I might start porting these classes over to WTL as and when needed. The WTL could do with a repository for such classes maybe in a open source repository. It might be a good idea to put it to the WTL forum? Norm Normski. - Professional Windows Programmer

Geez.. why not write your own using the MFC classes as a.. ahem... template? :) It's not like they're rocket science or anything... very simple at their core. -- Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?

When Nenad has the time, he usually accepts suggestions and implements them (or at least incorporates someones implementation into the next WTL release). When you say "open source" I hope you don't mean GPL, hehe, since he works for MS and all  But I'm sure your contributions will be greatly accepted.
