Dhandapani Ammasai wrote: What is the living expense in South Africa?. In other words, how much you can save, after spending on you and family needs?. Well I am hopeless at saving (yes, yes, even after my lecture about being financialy wise) so I won't talk about what I actually save. Accomodation (2 bedroom flat I share with Janina) costs R1750 a month. Petrol for my car is about R600 a month. That is work and weekend travel, about 1800ks per month. Food is about R180 a week R150 a month for other essentials (soap, shampoo etc. mainly Janina's expenses though of course, all I need is a toothbrush, some tootpaste and a block of soap) R100 a month for electricity (water is included in the rent) R1100 a month to pay off my car R800 for medical aid, RA fund and cell phone R500 for entertainment (books, movies, eating out etc.) :-D So all together that is: R5720. I get R13000 a month, and I get R7900 after tax. So I should be able to save R2180 a month (not that I do, but I should, technically, theoretically, if I was disciplined and did not have a girlfriend!) The main thing though is that Cape Town is an utterly fantastic place to live. We have everything the 1st world has plus a great big mountain in the middle of our city, wine farms 30 minutes away and two converging seas for spectacular beaches. The weather is also great and South Africans are friendly people so a good time is had by all. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love, and to be loved in return - Moulin Rouge Alison Pentland wrote: I now have an image of you in front of the mirror in the morning, wearing your knickers, socks and shoes trying to decided if they match!

I used to earn over USD$50,000 a year which after tax gave me over AUD$5,000 per month to play with. I ended up with fuck all a month after just living. That job still open? Good that you live in Chicago and not in the Bay Area. I used to work and live in the Bay Area and Man, that place is really really expensive. One have to spent all his money on the rent itself?. Would you believe that?. --------------- Dan Ammasai ---------------

US/Washington DC. 20 years in the industry, 10 years in software. $100K +/- depending on bonuses and options. However, before you think about moving, salaries are high here because it's expensive as hell to live in this area. For example my car insurance costs more than my mortgage used to when I lived in the midwest, and I have a clean record. Townhomes start at around $180K, and normal housing in decent areas is $250K and up. Rent for a 2 bedroom apartment was $1400 per month 5 years ago.... I probably lived better on 30K back in the midwest, and didn't worry about getting shot while walking my dog, and my kids had a chance at a decent education going to public school.

I have eight years experience in software development (I am a Mechanical Engineer with 15 years experience as an ME) and currently work for a Nasa support contractor developing failure analysis software. I make $85,000, but I am due for a raise in August. I am sure that my salary is somewhat influenced by my ME experience, even though I am doing software fulltime. I live in Huntsville, AL

I could earn twice as much as I do know and I would still be broke at the end of the month. U.S. (Ohio), 20 years experience, $95,000 per year. Unfortunately, I've reached a bit of a ceiling here in Ohio. To substantially increase my salary, I would have to convert into a manager, either in a company or on my own. I like getting my hands dirty too much...

UK £39,750 per year + bonus I've 13 years experience in both hardware [] and software...and I've been working on the Windows platform since 1996. Personally I think I've been pretty lucky...I went from £24,000 a year to £35,000 a year in one jump 4 years back!
