The monitor recommended[^] by Christian supports "only" HDMI and DSUB. (I want to go for the 22" version, though) My graphics card is dual DVI - can I hook it up with an DVI/HDMI adapter cable like this[^]? Prices vary from €3 to €100 - with the "technical reasons" I can find being the same as for bullshitting audiophiles into buying directed cables 8for AC signal, no less), but I wonder if there's something of matter that I could do wrong.

from the WikiPedia[^]"Typically HDMI cables are significantly more expensive than other cabling standards, not because of the cable’s manufacturing cost, but at a price most consumers are willing to pay, being still relatively high-end boutique. Many on-line retailers and auction sites are now offering high-end HDMI cables at prices similar to coaxial and RCA cabling, fractions of what most retailers are currently charging." Its copper dammit. If it meets the specs, it meets the specs. There could be some differential in the quality of the connectors and the aggressiveness of the quality control, but not enough to account for more than a 2 or 3 to 1 price differential.

I think I'm right in saying that DVI and HDMI are compatible, except that HDMI also carries audio - so the converter cable should work.

If you buy a 22" without a DVI adapter, I would be worried. :|

xacc.ide - now with IronScheme support
                IronScheme - 1.0 alpha 2 out now

DVI-D is electrically and protocol-wise compatible with HDMI. A simple adapter will work, even with HD-material (BluRay etc.)

I expect the HDMI input to work as well, wanting HDMI+DVI seriously restricts choice, and I hope that life is better with HDMI in the long run :)

Yes, it will work, that it how my center monitor is setup. Card: ASUS TOP - NVidia 7800 GTX Cable: (like) NEXXTECH™ 1.8M (6') HDMI TO DVI CABLE[^] Monitor: Westinghouse 24" L2410NM[^] The only thing that used to be an issue was to check if DVI was analog/digital and or single/dual link: DVI Wiki[^]. In particular most cables used to be single link, but the large (Apple) monitor needed dual. Not really an isuue now as all cables i see are dual.

Yes, used them a lot. There is a slight difference in sync timing if your graphics card supports DVI and HDMI modes separately but it doesn't make a difference in practice. The cheap ones are every bit as good by the way (we have used 10 metre cheapos without problems) - I got into shops just to shake my head at people falling for the sales talk. Elaine :Rose:

It's just another case where people don't understand how it works, so the salesman (who doesn't either, so can't even feel guilty) spews a load of jargon at them... > DUMMY MODE ON < ...and they assume that there's a perfectly reasonable explanation why the cable is more expensive, more expensive = better, and therefore they should buy the more expensive cable. The 'perfectly reasonable explanation' is that the manufacturers and stores are grasping bar stewards.
