Make sure to include the names of all participants, so I can call the police at 10PM when you're in violation of noise levels. Geez, why don't you have the courtesy to have a quiet party and respect your neighbors privacy? Marc

I did a similar thing once: big house party with lots of noise. We cleared absolutely everything out of the house and locked it in my room - and I mean everything! There wasn't a piece of furniture to sit on, or even a fork in the kitchen drawer. We went to the local discount store and bought several cases of beer and the party didn't actually start until about 11pm, when we came back from the pub. There were loads of people there - most of whom we didn't know, but we met them at the pub and invited them along. One of my friends was a dance DJ, so he brought his entire setup and was cranking out tunes in one room, while we had a looped tape of alternative/indie music in another room. We even had the lights and strobes (and some of those handy roadwork lights that flash. Put enough of those in a room and you've got a party!) Fortunately, our house was an end terrace (or condo in USA I guess) so there was nothing on one side and the other side was vacant. We did however, have the courtesy to warn the elderly couple on the other side of the vacant house and they said they didn't mind at all - they liked to see young people enjoying themselves. The next morning, we spoke to them and said we hoped it wasn't too noisy or raucous (There was after all, a minor fire in the back yard where someone had lit the drainpipe on fire. It was quickly extinguished by some party goers who were waiting to use the single occupied bathroom). The lady said, "Oh no it didn't bother me at all. In fact the thumping music rocked me to sleep!" The bass from the DJ's setup could be heard at least 2 houses down the road! Anyway my point is, you really should go and speak to them in person. A letter just isn't going to cut it - you might as well not bother. A letter just says "We're having a party, whether you like it not!". Meeting them in person shows that you actually care about their feelings and they are much more likely to be reasonable - and less likely to call the police...

It won't matter; they'll call the cops anyway.

I appreciate your intent of informing the neighbors to respect their privacy and comfort. At the same time, you can also plan out the ambience and environment in such a level so as to minimize the discomfort. Remember there may be patients who may in the neigborhood who might suffer acutely because of disturbances.

Or armed curmudgeons who plan on getting their sleep.

Letters are impersonal. Stop around and talk to them. And yeah, it's usually common courtesy to invite them as well if you think you'll be producing enough of a disturbance that they'll be inconvenienced.

more reason to call the cops. That's not a party in my book.

also include the ages, so that the police can rapidly identify any minors drinking, and list all drugs intended for use so the police can respond accordingly. I normally ignore parties, as long as they: A) are not every weekend B) show at least a little respect for the neighbors C) there is no alcohol and minors combined D) there are no illegal drugs used otherwise I have been known to call the cops. And I have a nice digital camera with vibration free lens. Handy for making that hand-held shot to help identify someone... :-D

Yes, invite them (us) all. Serve some brownies and punch at the start of the festivities, and the neighbors will all go home happy & sleepy. boom-sha-ka-la-ka
