AVG Choices

I am interested in experience folks have with the different AVG products. Primarily I would like experience comparing AVG Free anti-virus, rootkit and spyware versus the Internet Suite. Are the 3 products together enough protection? At this point I've uninstalled Norton Internet Suite and am not interested in spending the $55 USD for the AVG Internet Suite. I am frustrated with Norton thrashing my disk for the first 5 minutes when I boot up which is why I am getting rid of it.

I've used AVG (free) for quite some time and been quite pleased with it. However, it also appears to cause the hd to thrash around for some time (Vista with SP1). I don't recall it doing this with XP but that was some time back. It is still a good product.

I used the trial version of AVG antispyware over the weekend. IT found multiple infections adaware and spybot missed. SpyNoMore found more than any of the other 3 but lacked automatic removal. I manually removed everything it found (ultimately using an unbuntu live cd) but the system was still suffering from the random crashes that began with the infection and was sent back for an HD wipe/os reinstall.
Otherwise [Microsoft is] toast in the long term no matter how much money they've got. They would be already if the Linux community didn't have it's head so firmly up it's own command line buffer that it looks like taking 15 years to find the desktop. -- Matthew Faithfull

I recommend not using AV software at all. It keeps you on your toes, and this a/v stuff is all a plot to get everyone to buy software that doesn't really do anything. BTW, what will you be doing on Dec 22, 2012?

The update of pattern engine and backround system scan are some of the processes which 'eats' the CPU like anything.
