I was expecting this when I entered the workplace as a graduate back in september, out of around 100 people on my CS course, only 2 were females.

I remember one exception class in my college. It was our immediate juniors class. They had 50 students and out of them 35 were female. :-O

I was at a .NET User's Group meeting last night and the gender disparity struck me enough to comment about it to my wife when I got home. One of the presenters was a women, but of the 70-80 attendees you could count the number of females on one hand. Maybe Microsoft technology scares women for some subliminal reason!:) I should go to a Linux or Java group meeting and see if the percentage is higher there.

If you see someone without a beard at a Linux meeting, there's a high probability that it's female. However, I would highly recommend that you perform some additional tests just to be on the safe side.

most of the ones I knew in the late 80's and early 90's gave up. If you are really, REALLY dedicated to the business, and this is your passion, you stayed in. But many got ill treated, and ill paid, and moved on. If you like many things, why bother with the one that gives you the most flack for your gender? One in ten actually sounds like you are ahead on the average. When I went to school there was the worry that the men would be pushed out, yet here I am still trying to encourage high school students, especially women, to join this career.

Not around here (Pittsburgh). I mean I went to college in the 90s, there were probably at max 5 women in any of my computer classes with 30 or more men. Although in electrical engineering ( I have 2 degrees) the numbers were much much worse. Like 1 woman to every 40 men. Since I have worked in the same small department since I graduated I can not really judge that but I can say the last few times I posted a job there were 5 men to every woman who applied.

Good luck finding any female Linux geeks at all. Well, we have our Corinna here, but they're a rare breed, I tell ya.

10% is doing quite well. When I did my undergraduate stuff in the mid 1980's, by the time we hit senior year in a tough engineering school, there were 5 of us female-types out of 110 in the computer engineering major. Since then, I've always been either the only or one-of-the-two females in my work group of anwhere from 50 to 100. However, I've always been in the engineering end of the computer field (writing systems that interact directly with the hardware) as opposed to the comp-sci end like web apps and databases. I hear there are more females in that side but we are still a massive minority. My opinion is it all goes back to elementary and middle schools when girls are not encouraged or supported in their efforts in math and science. Judy

There are plenty of women where i work (for those keeping track... they average an 8 on the scale) however 99% are Business Analysts or Project leads... very few are technical.
