I've got an urge to buy a gadget, a new camera; and I can't shake myself out of it!! For the last few weeks, I've been spending too much time on http://www.dpreview.com[^] and in particular the Sigma forum. The new DP1 seems to be a real cute camera, but since I already have a panasonic LX2 and an older canon S400, I'm also tempted by a good entry level dSLR. when doing side-by-side of recent (2008) cameras, they all seems to be more or less the same. Canon 450D, Nikon D60, Pentax K200D, Sony A200, Sony A300. The new Olympus e420 (releasd in may) also seems to be nice; comment on existing olympus models ? Any comments on those before I go to the store and try them on ? Thanks.

I'm a Nikon man myself, it's kind of a personnel thing, your right that they are all about the same, they all take good pictures. I would take a trip to the camera shop and have a play, see which one feels the best for you I just re-read your post and saw the bottom line :sigh: ...

I can't comment on the cameras you mention other than to say read as many independent reviews as you can. What will make the difference is the business end of the camera i.e the photocell and the highest shutter speed it can process etc. I've got a Finepix S9600 which is just brilliant. It's built on the technology of the previous Finepix cameras so it is a pretty solid piece of kit. What's more is that it is now around £100 cheaper than it was a year ago. It's not a Dslr but it basically does everything an SLR does including inbuilt histogram and RAW mode.

They are all good cameras. Go down to the store and find the one that feels best in your hands :) (I have Canon EOS 20D. I like the way Canon feel and work in my hands.)

I have the Finepix S9100 (smaller zoom) and I am also very pleased with the camera. The only downside of it is the built-in flash that is a bit slow to charge.

I consider myself a serious hobbyist for photography and a year ago I was in the same position of choosing a new camera. I naturally assumed it was a dslr and nothing else but I took an unusual (for me) practical look at the situation, did a lot of research and ended up buying a Canon A640 which is about as up there you can go before the next level is a dslr of one kind or another. I chose this because I used to have a few 35mm slrs in the film days and I recalled vividly the amount of crap I had to haul around, the size of the thing etc and the likelihood of grabbing the camera when going out somewhere when it involved that much gear, weight etc. The A640's take very good quality pictures: http://www.flickr.com/cameras/canon/powershot_a640/[^] That link is a very useful guide to look at all cameras you are interested in. I also would not buy any other brand than Canon personally after the research I did a year ago, not sure if anything has changed much since then.
