Undoubtedly asked previously. Recommendations for a help authoring tool? (RoboHelp is out of my price range, BTW) I'm looking at HelpBreeze, but the state of help authoring seems to be in disarray, especially since Microsoft no longer includes support in Vista for some the previous help format unless the user downloads the winhlp32.exe. :sigh: Marc

The only thing I've ever used for quite a while is docbook . That or MS's HTML Help Workshop, which is a POS but it just barely does the job.

I've not done enough of it to know if it's much better than HTMLHelp, but the one I've been using lately is Abee CHM Maker. It's free and small, so a look costs nothing more than time.

The easiest way to make the world a better place is to refuse to help those that wreck it....

I haven't found anything very good so far. Over the years I've looked at about a dozen different editors and found all of them to be pretty primitive in terms of a good WYSIWYG interface to the docbook xml. But maybe there's something new out there?

There's what looks like quite a good one available on SourceForge but I can't remember the name, vaHelp, HelpMaker something like that anyway...

Sandcastle supports MAML, thats what I am heading towards, but as with DocBook, no UI.

xacc.ide - now with TabsToSpaces support
                IronScheme - 1.0 alpha 3 out now

I use FAR[^] for Awasu. Not too expensive and it gets the job done. You use a normal HTML editor to actually write the pages and then FAR to compile the help file.

Thanks! I'll compare it with HelpBreeze, but Help & Manual looks a lot more professional (even if it is twice the price). Marc

We got the standard version, that seems to be fairly close in price. The standard version is already pretty generous with features.

We've used DocBook, mainly because we can generate CHM and PDF fom it. And we can add headers, footers and a custom front page via the PDF stylesheets to match our corporate document templates. We've used the eDe toolset[^] to convert DocBook to CHM, HTML, PDF. I would like to get a converter from reStructured Text[^] to DocBook, as RST is much nicer to type than DocBook. OpenOffice v2[^] can be used to generate DocBook as well.

Mark - give this[^] a try. I've used it a bit (not extensive though) with few problems and the price is very good ($99) with the ability to use for a while before you break out the checkbook.
