it is a demonstration of l'hopital's rule of fluid mechanics. the people being crammed into the edge of the doorway of the train and not moving are in the 'boundary layer'.

My goodness, first thought was ‘looks like an al-Qaeda public platform of possibilities’. You must be hard up to get where you are going in that environment, but they look like they are all clean. In my city Bikini Bottom at least 10% of public transportation riders are bums and have a smell.

This is probably 10+ years old, at the time it was true. Having recently traveled to Japan and and been on their underground in peak hour I can assure you they have solved this problem, on the other hand Sydney could use some of these guys. Tokyo underground is excellent and signs are also in english for us mono lanuagers. I asked about this and a local told me they solved it by putting on more trains 12x more!

That's exactly right....that train looks like the ones that were in service in the early- to mid-90s when I first lived/worked in Tokyo; I have *vivid* memories of a few such episodes (there are strong incentives to a) get where you're going early and b) be scrupulously hygienic, as a previous commenter noted). When I was last there, in 2002, it was chalk-and-Friday different. I believe the comment about "12x as many" trains; certainly there are many more trains and the trains have more cars/passenger room. (Note to you Olympics-goers: the Beijing trains aren't as packed as this but they're trying hard in Shanghai.)

In the UK this is what we call "First Great Western Trains." I was foolish enough to take a train journey over Christmas and it was exactly like this except that there were no staff anywhere given the number of complaints they'd have to fend off. I had a "reserved" seat but given the conditions it was quite impossible to get to it as I was stuck in the door area between two carriages along with 16 or 17 other people and our luggage. On the return leg, we had a one hour wait at one station because there was no crew for the train. At least the latter point meant I got a 50% refund! The quality of or railway system is matched only by that of our wonderful new Terminal 5 at Heathrow where I believe thay have now given up even trying to send your luggage to the same destination as you, and forward it directly to Milan where the Italians can do the job properly. The prospect of the 2012 Olympics is mouth watering. I would expect the venues to be ready around 2037 and the transport system to get people to the event sometime the century after that if we're lucky. Perhaps it's just me but it seems in the UK, the ability to use words like "stakeholder" and "leveraging" in every sentence is valued far more highly than the ability to actually do a job. So, if you want to make it big, come to the UK, say "leveraging" a few hundred times and you will probably be put in charge of a bank. When it fails and has to be saved with £30Bn of taxpayers' money, you will then be given a reward of £750,000. What exactly would constitute failure? Rich

That is so true. A co-interviewer from HR sat with a list of words on her lap, each time the prospect uttered a word on that list it was ticked. I never saw the content of the list (it is probably now an appendix in some "How to Pass Interviews" paperback), but "stakeholder" and "leveraging" were probably among them.
