I just turned 40, I don't know what I'd do if I was as old as you. ;P Actually the SOP regarding birthdays or St. Patricks day etc is to take the day *after* off for recovery. Plus if you skip work you might miss a cake or something.

I make all the big 50 cakes, black icing, grave markers. I am sure there will be no end to the offers to make me a cake in 7 years.... I figure I will visit Tibet about then. ;P

To work, or not to work: that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous over-the-hill comments, Or to hide from a sea of troubles, And by avoiding them end them? a birthday, a celebration; No more; and by a celebration to say we accept The heart-ache and the thousand "over the hill jokes" Should I show up to work tomorrow or call in sick to work on my 43rd birthday? I actually had forgotten, my wife called up to ask if I was going in tomorrow, I said, "yeah, I thought so, do you need me for anything? Do you need me to stay home?" And after a casual conversation low and behold she finds out I forgot my own birthday... I hear the memory is the first to go.... ;P

Nope, memory is the second thing to go - I forget what the first is. Happy birthday, kid.

There is absolutely no reason for co-workers to know each others' ages or birthdays. And 43 isn't a special number anyway... 42 is.

43? Oh hell, El, you're not even old enough to play with the grown ups yet. I'll bet they still make you sit at the card table at Thanksgiving. And for this you want a day off? :-D Happy birthday, man - and many more!

You rock! I wish I'd been that creative on my 43rd - three-plus years ago! Not knowing your work situation....if you feel secure enough to be able to flip the office for a day, go or it! On the other hand...a lot of us over-40s (if not over-28s) have had to search long and hard for an office to go into (and get paid thereby0, so some people might wonder how you managed to avoid being offshored.... Anyway...congrats on the 22nd anniversary of your 21st birthday! :-D

Thanks. I am just a stubborn old mule is all. My family forbid me from trying for a career that was art related, so I took computer programming, and shaped the career into one related to art.

5'd. I rate you very highly, on par with Christopher Duncan. :-D

                                      Cheers, Vikram.
