...Microsoft still hasn't added what I think would be a really useful feature: Resize the folder/explorer window so that the window fits the contents of the folder. I suppose I'm unique that I look at folders in "detail" mode rather than pretty and useless icons, but when I have a folder that's got only 5 or 6 items in it (say shortcuts to remote desktops), wouldn't it be nice if the explorer window would actually size itself to just fit the files/shortcuts? And why it thinks that a folder of remote desktop and VPN connection shortcuts has anything to do with pictures, changing the header to "Date taken, tags, size, rating" still baffles me. Marc

Agreed, as an ex-RiscOS user I've always hated the way that Explorer windows containing just a few items maximise to cover the whole screen rather than just big enough to contain all the files.

The Vista Explorer has a real problem with that. It is very frequently showing the wrong set of columns for my files. Every time, I have to go into "Customize This Folder" to set it back to normal. Hopefully, this is fixed in SP1.

The flaky nature of the explorer was one of the many reasons I finally yanked Vista off a dev box this week and moved it back to XP. No matter which options I selected, I could never get it to remember to stay in details view (my preference for the most part), and the varying columns you mention were also irritating. This may sound like trivial stuff to some people, but it's like your coding editor. When you're talking about what you live in and work with all day long, these usability irritations eventually add up. I don't miss Vista even a little bit. I am keeping it on my laptop (which dual boots to XP) so that I have a reference machine, but that's about it. Microsoft is so massively overstaffed and bureaucratic these days I think they've completely lost touch with the market. And unfortunately, I just don't think that will ever get better, only worse - it's the path most all large corporations take. And really, that's a shame. I was never in the "I hate Microsoft" camp, and in fact I've made a decent living all these years as an MS dev. So it's a pity to seem them collapsing under their own weight. I'd like to think Windows 7 will be better. But then, I believe in the Easter Bunny, too.

what are the extensions? I don't have any, but a lot of what windows assumes, it has always assumed off of extensions... which even under XP resulted in poor assumptions and wrong behavior.

If you place music or video files in a folder and set the view to show artist and album info "once" i mean ONCE, even after deleting all the files and filling the folder with text or document files, artist and album info will still be displayed. Kinda bug. Don't know if it was fixed with SP1. I'm out of Vista now. New employer has put me up on a C++ project (VC6 IDE). The app is not expected to run on Vista. :)

I had to download a 3rd party explorer so that I could get a file explorer that runs as root administrator. I was trying o rename a bunch of files that happened to be in the programs directory so I either had to answer UAC's questions for every file or find a better way.

Sorry... are you saying you don't know if it's been fixed or that it's not been fixed?

                                  Cheers, Vikram.

It's not been fixed although there is a workaround on the web. See here or google for "vista forgetting folder type".

Thanks, Jon, I'll try that. It's also very annoying when the files in an Open File dialog are shown as BIG icons.

                                        Cheers, Vikram.

And why it thinks that a folder of remote desktop and VPN connection shortcuts has anything to do with pictures, changing the header to "Date taken, tags, size, rating" still baffles me.

The Vista Explorer has a real problem with that. It is very frequently showing the wrong set of columns for my files. Every time, I have to go into "Customize This Folder" to set it back to normal. Hopefully, this is fixed in SP1.

Not fixed with SP1. There is a registry hack for it though. http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsVista/Fix_Windows_Vista_Folder_Templates.html[^]
