The Lounge Link
-
You know...most of the troubles like posting programming questions in here stem from newbies coming in on the 'Lounge' link because it's the most obvious. Maybe not having that link and letting them sort through 'Message Boards' first would solve most of the problems. Or maybe fix it so the Lounge link doesn't show unless the person has been a member for a while? ...just some thoughts
Forget the lounge problem, there's bigger fires to fight with the article problems, I've counted 9 dross articles today.

Why not go a step further? Provide a completely separate codeproject - with it's own lounge, articles, message boards, forums etc. - to everyone who has been a member for less than a year. This would be definitely interesting...
We are a big screwed up dysfunctional psychotic happy family - some more screwed up, others more happy, but everybody's psychotic joint venture definition of CP

blog: TDD - the Aha! | Linkify!| FoldWithUs! | sighistSorry...needed to take a nappy :) You don't agree?...the quickest path to posting a message is the lounge link...it being a programmer's site, they figure they can post their question in the lounge which starts these unnecessary flame wars. The disclaimer at the top about not posting programming questions, well...who takes time to read the fine print? I'm not suggesting some kind of 'segregation' or something which you seem to be taking offense to...just suggesting things can never be too obvious when you're dealing with '5,019,378 members and growing!'

Also, at the top of the site is a language filter...the user can choose 'Home,All Topics, MFC/C++, C#, VB.NET, ASP.NET, SQL Architect' ...maybe the quick link to the message boards should reflect the user's choice, eg: if 'C#' is chosen, then the quick link to the message boards should be 'C#' and not 'Lounge'...what do you think? This would probably direct some questions traffic where it should go?

It is confusing. The link, hidden amongst the other links, says "Got a programming question?" and then lists all of the forums - The Lounge, Coding Horrors, etc are all listed and the shouldn't be, imho. I think "Submit Articles" and "Got a programming question?" should be more of the centerpiece on the main page, with the others being bullet items. Or at least separated somehow. But, it's not confusing enough to post questions in the lounge or post questions as articles!

That was what triggered my idea - we old farts and lounge lizards want our lounge up there. This led to the idea of a completely rearranged site for the newbs - butthen, why not leave the site as is, and just pack the people together?

I don't - It was just an extrapolation of some of the suggestions on how to deal with the problem. And in spite of the joke icon, it was "think about it" serious: would it work? would we like it? How would people circumvent it? It might have been inspired by my recent gripe with the "location-sensitive 'net".
