"and if a member has posted a message then each year of membership adds 1 level until the member hits Silver." You dont qualify as Gold.

Something happened over the last few days, I had been a gold member and now am silver (it's fine - I'm not taking it personally!). Either the rules have changed or they were calculated wrongly during the site upgrade, but there has definitely been a re-grading over the last few days. Preventing folks getting to gold simply by tenure is probably a good thing.

Chris changed the criteria for becoming Gold.

Does that really matter? And where were you lurking around, until you were downgraded? In your 4+ years here, you have posted a total of 82 messages. After Oct 07, you have posted a message today, asking *why* your membership was downgraded. IMHO, you must be a platinum member. No, really. :|

You missed the point. I just asked a plain generic question.

Had you checked the immediate previous thread before starting one, the same generic question was asked by someone else, and was answered.

No I don't believe the previous was about that. Once again, I was asking about whether you can go behind in the membership level. I guess there was a reply to the previous post related to this. But that wasn't there when I posted.

Hi Chris, Can the membership be downgraded? The last time (been a while) I checked I was a gold member.

With the introduction of the article moderation scheme and the need to pick a group of members who are involved enough in the site to handle moderation correctly I revisted the definition of 'Gold'. Previously, and to most Gold members' dismay, you could get Gold by posting a single message then leaving an account dormant. I've modified this so that Gold can only be attained through participation.

                cheers, Chris Maunder

I still think that message count should not be a consideration for rank elevation to gold - well, in anything other than replies in the programming forums. However, baby steps toward a more responsible and participatory population are better than no steps at all. :)
