I was readin ars and came across this: microsoft-lays-out-windows-embedded-roadmap[^] " * Windows Embedded Standard is expected to succeed Windows XP Embedded sometime in 2008 * Windows Embedded Compact is expected to succeed Windows Embedded CE sometime in 2009 * Windows Embedded POSReady will succeed Windows Embedded for Point of Service sometime in 2009 * Windows Embedded Enterprise, which currently includes Windows Vista and Windows XP for Embedded Systems, does not have a launch timeframe" And for a moment saw it as "Windows Embedded Piece of Shit Ready"? Wow, I guess folks in Marketing took some truth serum at the local party last night... Thought it was amusing :)

Ha, I read that moments ago too. When I first saw the POS acronym used in an IT way, I thought huh, Piece Of Sh*t, why would they say that? But then assumed it must be point of sale, which as pointed out in this thread (and confused me too in the same MS press release how it's stated differently) that it's now considered point of service? Sheesh. Yuck, what a PIA!! I suppose we should send PIA (pain in the a*s for those who may not have come across this one yet) to MS marketing and warn them of it's meaning, for future products.

Kent, around here we put the't' in - so it's PITA - pronounceable, like the bread, but distinguished by being all caps to indicate the acronym. ;P

Ha, yeah, you know, I have seen it that way too come to think of it. But I think of the bread first, then based on context realize the meaning. So, I guess for me then, if for only a couple hundred milliseconds, PIA vs PITA can be a PIA (or PITA)!!

Our VP of Sales was trying to come up with a catchy name for our new document scanning software. He decided on 'Paperless Office System', and even ordered brochures and had the contracts changed to reflect the new name. I told our CEO that I thought marketing our new product with the acronym of POS was probably a bad idea, and opened up a lot of doors for our competitors to market against us with things like 'well, it's not called POS for nothing'. The CEO didn't seem too concerned, so I got a lot of the employees to begin referring to it as the POS. He got the hint and had the name changed. Dan

One of my favorites from a few years back was the website for "We Are NT Hosting". Yep - it was wearenthosting.com - and it appears they are now correct. They aren't hosting any more. Bruce

Sadly sometimes when engineering comes up with the perfect acronym we get vetoed down by marketing. One of the engineers favourites was for a new X-ray medical scanner - Simple Examanation by X-rays or SEX for short. At another company the engineers proudly developed their Personnel Information Storage System Of course this only stengths marketing's view that engineers just don't get out enough, guess they were just sore they hadn't thought of them first......or maybe they were just right! Still be thankful you don’t have the label on the door Marketing And Design BFN

I get to create and maintain software that integrates with QuickBooks POS (Point Of Sale) where I am working. POS is a very apt name for the interface. And the software, as well, but mostly I just see the interface. Let's put it this way: I wish I was working with Microsoft Small Business Accounting. Yeah, POS is apt.
