I haven't been on CP for several weeks now and I've had a few greeting which I really appreciate! I've had some questions about my job situation so I'll get everyone up to date. I had accepted a job with a small advertising firm that did Ruby on Rails which I had never programmed. I was still interviewing with other companies and I was done at Gateway. During the two weeks between Gateway and the start date at the ad firm, I talked to them about all these big projects they said were backed up. Turns out it was one and two websites to tweak. They were big about this "90 day initial trial period" to see if I would work out. I started to get the feeling that I would get their big project done in 90 days and then they would let me go. I just had a bad feeling. I had two interviews with a company that I really wanted to work for. It's a sub-business of a bank and this sub-business was started by guys that my husband used to work for. They've gone from 30 to 300 employees in less than 3 years. The Wed before I was supposed to start at the ad firm they made an offer which was also closer to pay as I got at Gateway. So this is my second week at my new job and I LOVE it there. Not sure what my final role will be but it looks like I'm going to be taking over the code for a large pre-paid card project. It's so nice to work with intelligent people who don't chew tobacco at their desks or yak about nothing. In the two years I worked at Gateway not ONCE did I get invited out for lunch. I've already been out three times with my coworkers. I wasn't online because I went into depression. Not just "I feel down" but clinical depression. I was just feeling worthless and my poor husband had to put up with a lot of tears and mood swings. So I'm back in the game, feeling good, and spittin' mad code ya'll! I need to update my profile--we're up to four cats now. The newest one's nickname is Nom Nom (if you've ever visited a certain website that talks about cats and cheeseburgers you'll get it). And I'm looking to buy a 4-cylinder scooter for the commute. Hopefully I'll get some time to update my blog. Glad to see the old gang, but SB hasn't changed at all! Thanks all! leckey :-D

I think it's worse in South Dakota because we are an 'at will' state so an employer can fire you and unless you can really prove you got screwed over (like fired for religion, sex, etc) you have no recourse.

I wouldn't have the guts to walk back and work for a boss that doesn't want me if that happened. Maybe it's just me…

I'm in South Dakota and we still need people--not sure where you are living. I just saw you have an Amazon. How old? (We have two cockatoos also and I am a bird behaviorist--used to be a vet tech.) I love talking to other parrot people.

He is 21, we've had him for 7 years now. He talks up a storm and will cuss at you once and a while. Cockatoos are great but once you start getting into the big birds like them and McCaw's I get a little nervous. They can take off your finger in a hurry. I am here in Washington state, rusting away slowly. Still on a learning curve. No practical experience. Can design a nice UI, set properties, create the database, set bindings, but haven't got the actual code writing down yet. Up to this point in my life I've been a Computer/Electronics tech. Wanna be a programmer when I grow up.(just turned 45) :-D

I contracted for several years, never really knowing when the sword would fall. What I found is after a while I became inured to the entire jobloss/job hunt episodes. The first one was scary, the last one I didn't loose a bit of sleep about. I becsme good with interviews, picked up a mass of experience and contacts. I soon found I could get 2 or 3 offers within a month I actually would want. That you've had two offers is a good indication you're in a similar position. Having been privy to the interview process at a few companies I can tell you GOOD technology staff are hard to find. In fact any talent in St Louis should drop me a line ;)

I started loving 'toos after spending time in Australia. My umbie has left a couple of scars from mating season after we rescued her, but if you know how to train them, they can be so fun. My Mol is HUGE and intimidates people at first and then they realize he just wants to be help and petted. For some reason hyacinth macaws love me; I've met four and ALL of them have vomited for me. Very strange...

In my case it wasn't that my supervisor did not want me, but the company who bought us basically looked at tenure and pay and started cutting people. I actually felt bad for my supervisor; I could tell he hated telling me about the lay off.

While I enjoyed talking about the Chatty Cathy's, I hated working with them. I'm sure I'll find some people to mock--the girl who works in the cube across from me is super sweet--but I don't know if she actually does work because she's always on People.com. And I promise to post stupid American holidays this weekend just for you!

I'm impressed, when I first landed here people always asked if I was English or Australian. After the second time of removing obscure items from their nether regions they usually stopped. Now people ask if I from MN .. I guess a mix of English and midwest sounds Minnesotan, ya.

WHAT? English, Ausssie or Kiwi sounds nothing like northern MN! One guy my husband used to work with is from England (Manchester) and my hubby kept telling me he was from Australia, so I wanted to know from what part. He never asked. As soon as I met him I knew he was English and NOT Aussie. If you're from northern MN you use a lot of 'eh' and end sentences with 'there.' Southern MN is like eastern SD and we draw out our O's. It's South Dakooota and Minnesooooota.

I'm impressed, when I first landed here people always asked if I was English or Australian. After the second time of removing obscure items from their nether regions they usually stopped. Now people ask if I from MN .. I guess a mix of English and midwest sounds Minnesotan, ya.

When in Australia I said I was from South Dakota. For some odd reason several people asked, "that's in Texas, right?"

even though Australia is pretty big, a lot of people dont appreciate the size/geography of the USA .. I do because the last trip I did (there) was LA -> Chicago -> Boston -> San Francisco -> LA ... (and I have a heap of friends who regularly commute in-between) even then, I can get a bit 'lazy' ..and use 'over there' for example to denote 'anywhere in the continental USA' 'g'

Unfortunately after moving here I don't have a good support network. I never found people I could really hang with. My "other mother" (mom of my ex Aussie boyfriend) recently got married and moved to Portsmouth, Vic. I wanted to go to the wedding but with the US dollar so low it was too expensive. I can't wait to go back!

I know, and even my garbled accent of the last few years sounds nothing like. Recently I've been trying to eradicate the midwest aspect that crept in.
