She's the first major female race car driver. People make a big stink about her being a girl because apparently we're normally found in the back seat telling men how to drive.

I think it's more because, outside drag racing, no woman has done as well as she has in the highest levels of auto racing.

yeah, I just despise when a story is "a woman!" or "an African-American" or "an American Indian" starts the story...it's like admiring the higher echelon of a protected class. No one ever says, "a South Dakotan!..."

That's why it has to be very qualified, which I didn't do well enough. Seems that announcers in the US have also forgotten about [Shirley_Muldowney](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley Muldowney)[^] who not only won drag races, but the championship three times, Angelle Sampey[^], who has the most wins of any women in [professional] motor sports, and Melanie Troxel.

Danica got a lot of ridicule over the years because she was such a beautiful young woman. She not only proved she could drive a car and win a race, but she has set a new record for style in a male dominated sport. I am more interested in Indy racing now than ever before, and I admire all the other female drivers who have not received the acclaim they are due for having stepped up to the challenge. :cool:

I find racing extremely boring, unless I am doing the racing of course. Watching a race on TV and/or admiring a racer is just silly.

I love all forms of racing except Nascar and I've got to say that rally racing requires the most skill for the driver, not even close to any other form of auto racing. Michele is probably the most skilled female racing driver ever.

Do you feel the same about all sports? Art? What's the difference?:confused: I watch certain sports because I appreciate the high skill and strategy. Whether I can do it too or not isn't a question.

I wish I could have seen that. :sigh: I follow IRL, and TSN had it listed Saturday, but they showed something else the whole time.:mad: And they never repeat the shows (NASCAR repeats Thursday which is nice if you miss it Sunday).

Nope - I think Della Woods holds that distinction, racing NHRA funny cars in the mid 60's. The first (and pretty much most) successful female driver ever goes to Shirley Muldowney (also NHRA, but in top-fuel dragsters). No female driver has really been a star in Nascar. In Nacsar, they simply don't have the upper body strength to compete under race conditions. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just stating facts. A *typical* woman simply doesn't have the physical attributes to throw a 3500 pound car around for four hours at a time. Danica Patrick is the first successful (if by winning one race indicates that you're "successful") female driver in Indy cars. I don't follow open-wheel racing very closely, but I hope she continues to do well.

I've yet to hear one "stink" raised over Danica Patrick being a girl. The only problem drivers had with her was that she appeared to have a weight advantage over the men. The IRL resolved this issue by mandating a combined car/driver weight. After her recent win under this new rule, nobody can claim that she's got an unfair advantage (as if she ever did to begin with). The only people making a stink out of her being a girl are the people that thinks there's already a big stink about her being a girl.
