Take up a sport, gets you exercise and you meet new people whilst having fun, you'll feel better about yourself as a whole.

Work like a dog night and day until you are 40. Then you can retire and date women half your age. Give up the booze, it'll kill you.

 As long as you booze it out for good reasons and with good friends, do it. Other than that, just go cold turkey (but not wild turkey!) Go out, have a date with the big bright spot in the sky, hug those brown and green stuff that grow from the ground.

I could use some advice on the cat herding--other than cracking open a can of anything, I can't get them to behave.

thus I go on the off season. :) I went to yosemite when they were just shy of closing the high roads, they closed it the night I stayed on the north side of the grand canyon. Which is another thing, while 90% of the people are clammoring for a picture on the southern side... you just jump over to the other side of the canyon and catch a similar view without all the tourists. :) Tourists go for easy, a bit of effort and you can still see touristy places without the tourists.

thus I go on the off season.

There are both pros and cons of the crowds. When there is a crowd, you get to see a lot of people and thier habits. When there is alone, you get a focussed attention to the place (destination).
