eBooks [modified]

Has anyone ever purchased a programming-related eBook? Can I put it on any machine and still read it? On the other hand, the ebook is the same price as the print version. I thought the whole idea behind ebooks was to realize a significant cost savings (and a lower eco-oriented footprint).

Yes, and depends who supplies it (I suppose). I've had no problems moving the ones I've bought from machine to machine.

A lot of printed books now come with an eBook version. Printing an eBook for personal use would probably be 10x more expensive and then its not even bound yet!

Well, you know John. He's looking for man points. Killing a few trees, doing book binding himself... Marc

Yes. They have been in PDF format. The file can be copied anywhere. But I never liked reading an e-book. It does not work with my style of reading. In my opinion E-Books are more suited for reference.

I was once subscribed to books24x7 (not really ebooks, but quite the same idea). The price is quite high (499$/year), but you have unlimited access to many books. It is browser-based, so you can access it from any machine.

Wrong! Chuck Norris doesn't read books. He stares them down until he gets the information he wants.

I've bought several books from Manning Press and read them on my computer. One of the reasons I like Manning is that they don't DRM the ebook. Also, if you only want the ebook, it's usually about half of the printed book. If you want both, it's the same price as the printed book (but only if you buy it through Manning). They also have (or used to, I haven't looked lately) where you could buy the ebook and then later, get the printed book for half off. Mike

Manning and aPress both allow you to read the book from more than one machine.
