Professional Icon Packs
-
I think: 1. I can not easily create an icon that looks as good as a professional can 2. I'd rather the developers on my team spend their time doing development, so I'll happily pay the pittance for an icon pack....The last thing I want to have to explain is why a project is late because we spent n hours clicking around in the icon editor
Just trying to keep the forces of entropy at bay
Yes, thank you RedZenBird. I was actually canvassing for thoughts on purchased icon packs, not the philosophy of icon purchase.

I, personally, have not, but check out these sites: glyFX[^] Forrest Walter[^]

I'll bear that site in mind the next time I want to adorn my application with He-Man iconography :)

What, you get besieged by morons - which I might add seems to have been the theme of my day - imparting Buddhist wisdom on icons? I may now have to write to the Dalai Lama to tell him his religion leaves a lot to be desired. :)

It is at times like this I find comfort in St. Paul's second letter to Corinthians.
St. Paul:
Dear Corinthians, YOU BASTARDS! Yours, St. Paul. (The Apostle)

Has anybody here paid out for an icon pack - if so which did you go for, what did you think and how much did you pay? (I can't draw, so throwing money at people seems to be the only option. Also, I've looked at FamFamFam - I need a range of sizes and an overall look 'n' feel that is consistent.)
There is review here: http://www.iconsreview.com/[^] I personally have use icons from: http://www.aha-soft.com/stock-icons/toolbar-icons.htm[^] These are excellent quality, and you can buy individual icons for $5 if you only need a few.
Best wishes, Hans

Now, now. He does professional stuff too. Click on the icon link, and then see the Free Lance work he's done. He's very talented. Even if it's He-Man and/or She-ra icons you're interested in ....

Hi Martin, Maybe you should check out these blog posts from Smashing magazine. There's a bunch of high quality free icons available. And if this is not an option for your project, at least you can compare the quality of the agencies and opt to go for their commercial packages: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/03/06/35-really-incredible-free-icon-sets/[^] and/or http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/04/01/fresh-free-and-gorgeous-rssfeed-icons/[^] Good luck, Peter.

I've not yet paid for an icon pack but there are some great icons for use under the LGPL licence at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Clear

Check out the stock icons from GlyphLab. Each icon comes in a bunch of different sizes and formats. The guy who runs the shop (David) has been very helpful each time I've asked a question. And the pricing is great -- just $199. http://www.glyphlab.com/stock\_icons/ - Anthony www.flospace.com

I work with icons every day. Making them, inserting them here and there, using them in documentation blah blah.. We actually use icons from several different sources including custom made icons by moi. The libraries we use are: glyfx vista common - very mainstream glyphlabs - I like a lot of the miscellaneous and symbols in this pack, but people icons look like the fisher-price people (remember the peg peeps :D) Awicons - I like these but they can be very pale against pastel backgrounds IconShock - for some reason my boss went nuts and bought this company's ENTIRE library collection. Something like 39GB of compressed images!! These have everything from normal XP looking icons to very sleek sophisticated web 2.0 icons. Beware they cover a HOOOGE variety of needs from general to medical and they contain a lot of european references such as flags and symbolisms for types of businesses. I would say that of all these we dip the most into everything but glyfx.

I have used www.virtuallnk.com for a number of years - great icons - every format you can think of and they continually release new packs.

Just go to iStockphoto.com and do a search for icons. Lots of variety and very reasonably priced.

I've paid for them before. The one I used was http://www.iconexperience.com/[^]. They are great quality icons, have a full range of sizes and also include the png versions of each icon in both a shadow and non-shadowed form for all sizes. I paid something like 350 at the time (its been a few years now) but I felt like it was a pretty good value for what I got. I know there are a few others that I looked at and thought were good quality as well but most of them seem to cost over 500.
