Noooooo. You actually have to post 25 or more articles to be platinum. That's the only way to get there. I think you should have to post 10 or more articles to get gold, and forum participation shouldn't be considered. In fact, anyone that isn't already gold but that attains CP MVP status twice should be made gold. That way, forum participation would be considered with it being tied to a specific message count.

I'm not surprised. I suspect either of us could dummy* up the query to pull the data that has to be there for everyone's vote to be tracked. And I can see where he'd think it would be useful information for him. I'm not sure I am convinced that message voting helps the ambiance of the forums although I think an argument can be made that voting Mr. S down in the Lounge may temper any urge to vote down his articles. (Whether that's true in practice is arguable, though I would gather you believe it hasn't protected you.) I've never quite figured out whether I was supposed to give someone who was arguing effectively against something I believed in a 5 for effectiveness or a 1 for not believing as I do. I have something of a preference for the former, but the latter seems to be the more common practice, and I have indulged in it myself from time to time. :-O * dummy in the sense of not knowing the database.

I address that problem through the practice of not voting forum messages at all. I see the value of voting articles because that helps other users find articles that may do a better job of addressing a particular programming problem. It's just too bad that the voting system is abused on such a regular basis with regards to articles.

And since it directly contravenes the justification you outlined above, allows Gresham's Law to assert its sway in the article repository - though, so far, not so completely as to make it unusable.

I don't code outside of work (ie. hobby or side work) so they "own" the IP I do create. I asked management about writing an article once and the "approval" process they wanted was onerous at best. I get paid quite well so for me it's not worth rocking the boat.

Bug? Why? His 2091 posts(as of this morning when I check by having to 'cut and paste' the URl you forgot to link) are all in the Soapbox, or at least the first 2 pages of posts I checked, and if I'm not mistaken is where rants, raves, flames and other posts, such as this, belong.

Because at one recent point it was changed so that gold could only be gotten via articles like platinum as part of the moderation updates. Either this has changed or a bug reverted it.
