Given the recent "just look at it" agitation, I dare to propose the following: 1. Article submission wizard should be only available to gold and platinum members. 2. Bronze and silver members will have to send the articles to the codeproject's submission email. 3. Only those messages posted in the programming forums should increase the membership status; those messages posted in non-programming forums should not count.

1 - never gonna happen. 2 - never gonna happen, you're just making it harder for people to participate 3 - I believe this is already the case. It certainly is true for CP MVP status.

But there's been too much abuse. And this, IMHO, will be a far better filter. Only those members with approved articles would be trusted and the Wizard would be available to them. If a new member wants to participate, I don't think it would harm that, for the first articles, he/she does the process through the submission mail.

You're right, this proves that posts to any forum increase membership, I guess I am wrong, on that front. I guess the problem is, the system was not created with this sort of user in mind.

3 is fine by me, but 1 and 2 are too severe. I would propose a system independent of bronze/silver/gold/platinum: initial state: wizard not available to a new author; article to be sent to editor staff; they can: a) reject b) accept, edit, publish c) accept, edit, publish and if it's an excellent article enable wizard for subsequent articles if b) then wizard gets enabled automatically if first 10 votes give an average rating of at least say 3.5 as long as the wizard is not enabled, the author has to mail articles to the staff; however once the wizard is enabled for a member, it remains enabled (unless staff decides otherwise). So basically everyone's first article goes to staff. No more silly titles, silly pictures, free disk space. IMO removing the satisfaction of seing one's first piece of sh*t published immediately will cause a dramatic drop in the number of worthless entries, hence keep the above doable. :)

This month's tips: - before you ask a question here, search CodeProject, then Google; - the quality and detail of your question reflects on the effectiveness of the help you are likely to get; - use PRE tags to preserve formatting when showing multi-line code snippets.

There are a lot more examples out there, need only look at posters from the last couple of hours to find them. In any case the changes needed in the system to bring it up to scratch are very simple and can be accomplished without much hassle. :)

Always easier said than done. Making site wide changes is a time consuming task, that requires planning, development and testing.

Ok, that's reasonable. I mean, yeah, maybe my points were severe. The point is that the article submission wizard should be a privilege. Your points seem OK to me: the first article should be sent to the staff, agree on that.

Suggestions forum might be a better place to post this stuff, why is it all spilling out here?

I have less than 200 posts which mostly in lounge. I have only 8 articles and among them 4 is only rated above 4. I am not sure if I deserve the Gold status. I think if I was degraded down to silver I'd not be unhappy. I'd rather try to improve my status with real work.

If it was the case that I have to mail my article I think I'd never start writing articles. I have no real data, but I think most people submit their first article than second article. So, the CP staff may get overloaded. It should be automated anyway.

I do not agree. If someone can't navigate the article submission wizard, what makes you think their emailed submissions are going to be any better? Further, this puts ALL of the onus of article approval right back into the hands of the people that are already swamped with work. In fact, I don't think there should even BE a email-submission option at this point.

I don't think message posting should be considered, but if it must, I agree, but this should only apply to replies - NOT the post that starts a thread. Non-programming forums include Hardware and General Discussion, which while not programming forums, are tech-related. Replies that are voted 1.0 shouldn't count either (and I mean *exactly* 1.0 - if just one person votes 2 or higher, it should count). The forums that definitely shouldn't count are the Soapbox and the Lounge.

Agreed. I thought you had to post articles to be gold. Chris?

Nope, zero articles, Gold status. But I got that for my sensitive Yeeehhhhhaaaaaaawwwwwwwww post 12th September 2001 that lead to the creation of the SoapBox.

Because they will be filtered by the editors. Althoguh...
