I don't know about Mexico, but did you know cans in the US are treated so if you shake them, wait 30 seconds and they won't explode?

Nope, 2000 km south and 1500 km east from Las Vegas. The epicenter was near Acapulco it seems.

I read in a trivia book that the only US state to never felt an earthquake is North Dakota. I remember about 20 years ago when one was felt in SD (very small) but I was not in the area to feel it. I figure we have enough blizzards and tornadoes to keep us busy!

Interesting. How are they treated? Here in the Middle East you have to treat soda and beer cans with exaggerated care, almost the way you would with nitro.

Yes I'd like to hear how this is as well. I used to work for a bottling company many years ago and as far as I know their only "treatment" is to design them to be strong enough to withstand their internal pressure.

Well that was scary. A 6° (Richter) earthquake has just happened. My entire building shacked enough so that all of us residents went outside. It seems that there were no damages, still I'm still shaking (just a bit). Oh well, a beer might help...

This was my one (well my family's anyway). http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/eqinthenews/2007/us2007aqbk/[^] I got up there three days later. Hitched a lift with French Military who had come from New Caledonia. Helped out my family and my work (local Telco) and invited myself into the Provincial Disaster Committee meetings to find out what was going on and contribute what I could. I now have a vastly different understanding of how to deal with major disasters. First - Remember that everyone there is a victim (regardless of whether their house is still standing). Don't ask if they need anything, get in as fast as you can and find out for yourself. Work with others outside to move what's needed as fast as possible. Second - Assume that logistics will be a nightmare, water and sanitation will be gone, power and communications will be out, etc. Third - Accurate, up to date information is vital. However, inside the disaster zone information will be fragmentary, even so use it. Old information (even by a few hours) can be very dangerous even deadly. Keep yourself and everyone around you as up to date as possible. Verify information as much as is practical then share it - needless secrecy can cause misery. Fourth - Speak up, act in behalf of those too traumatised to help themselves. If you have knowledge of local customs relevant to the disaster recovery, spread that information around to the disaster recovery teams coming in from the outside.

I am convinced that lobotomising users will make little to no difference.

I'd like to call "Urban Legend" on this one. I think the "wait 30 seconds" just is enough for the rest of the CO2 to evaporate into the area above the liquid. Pulling the lid will then release the CO2 without spilling the content. If the "treatment" was true, why wouldn't they do it on a bottle? The surface area relative to the contained volume is much smaller, so it would be less expensive than coating the can. Quick, someone set the Mythbusters on it....

AFAIK, they do treat beer with anti-foam products during production, but they're filtered out before bottling so i doubt they make any difference on the stability of cans.

Buy a case of Old Milwaukee or Budweiser (or the cheapest, most vile swill locally available), rent a paint shaker from the local contractor-supply place, and leave the shaker working on the case of beer overnight/up to mid-afternoon, ideally on a really sunny day. Then give a "gift" to your least-favorite brother-in-law as a "goodwill gesture." Then stand back....way back. How far back? Let's see...if I'm in Singapore, Albuquerque ought to be just about right. :-D
