Just wondering where I would be able to pick up source / binaries for a mp3 encoding / decoding library that doesn't use existing windows components like those in WMP. Reason for this is that I am gearing up to write a C++ distributed mp3 service, and would like to take some time off the job by using a pre-rolled library if possible. Thanks in advance. Full credit will be given if someone woudl like to contribute, or join up on the project. I was looking for one of these and had very little luck. What wasn't GPLed either used assembler or looked very suspect. Problem is that Lame also suffers from the patent monster [^]. Ogg Vorbis [^] might be a solution, although as I recall some of the MPEG patent holders were complaining it still infringed. I have no idea if that is the case or not. Indeed, from what I remember Fraunhofer have something to do with the rights for it, and a couple of students developed some encoder and they were asked to pay $25,000 each for a licence!
