good wiki reccomendations? [modified]

We have a wiki at work. My boss tasked wanted me to look into whether or not we could setup group permissions and then limit the visibility of certain pages based on what group you were part of. When I built the wiki pages originally I used MediaWiki because it was lightweight and easy to setup. Sadly they don't support what we want to do at all. So, any suggestions for an easy to use wiki that does allow this?

What about SharePoint? It's really nice for such purposes (group permissions, visibility, document tracking, etc). And it comes for free; you just need a Windows 2003 Server box.

I was going to suggest the same. WSS is very good for that.

Way too big, have to hassle with licensing, which we may very well have, but getting this to work across our various divisions is usually a headache. Plus it's going on a linux box, for better or worse.

No thank God! I don't know why I used that. :)

As a matter fact no. There are two flavors of SharePoint: Windows SharePoint Services and Office SharePoint Services. Windows SharePoint Services is free and as long as you have a Windows 2003 license it is free for you. Also setting up may be very simple (for WSS not MOSS).

That ends the discussions.

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Group_Based_Access_Control[^] Group access isn't built in by default but there appear to be a lot of extensions that add such functionality. Search this page for "group" or "permission" http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension_Matrix[^]

True but there's a big 'ol banner at the top of your first link: "If you need per-page or partial page access restrictions, you are advised to install an appropriate content management package. MediaWiki was not written to provide per-page access restrictions," That's why I thought maybe it was time to look for something else.

I currently use Twiki. I run it on Apache and FreeBSD. It executes very nicely on older hardware. I've seen some references and cookbook instructions for using it on Windows. It's perl based and runs well on all the *nix platforms. It has the permissions and security features you are looking for. You can assign different groups, visibility, etc. I've had really good luck with it over many years of operation. The other thing I really like is that the documentation is awesome. You're up and running in less than 1/2 hour and you're creating fancy skins and layouts in a couple of days. I hope this helps. :)

Have you looked at Trac? I've used it successfully with nearly a dozen different clients; there are several mailing lists, a good support Website and a (usually-)responsive IRC channel on freenode. It lets you specify read- and write-access via user or group names and ACLs. It may not be a dessert topping and a floor wax, but for a medium-duty, securable wiki, it might well be what you're looking for.
