Articulating coherent thought is also, apparently, causing you a distinct problem. :-)

I have to talk aloud; otherwise, how do I know I'm home?

I sometimes do that but I am a native English speaker. I don't know if it is particularly more annoying to the non-native English that hear me but I do know it drives me nuts when I hear Chinese being spoken down the hall. It seems my brain focuses very closely on their what they are saying (trying to decipher it) making their conversation sound louder than it really is and totally breaking any concentration that I have.
