The not so bright people out there had expected sales to skyrocket once the format war was done, but it didn't. They thought was people would ignore the massive defects of Blu-ray and buy like the dumb sheep that they are, handcuffing themselves to the Sony bank account.[^]

I love my BluRay stuff. I think it's the economy more that anything else right now.

I am pretty satisfied with my 5-year-old DVD player. It displays great in Progressive Scan on my 52-inch TV. I will buy blu-ray when DVD become completely dead, which should not be before another year. Anyway, none of the serious brands is making blu-ray players yet.

If I have to rebuild my DVD collection I think I will just shoot myself.

I was rather bummed when I learned (via direct experience) that CDs "go bad" ... but not quite that badly.

I am pretty sure Blu-Ray players can play regular DVDs.

Sounds to me like sour grapes on the part of a rabid HD-DVD owner.

The only downside to blu-ray is that once you've watched a blu-ray in 1080p you can't stand to watch anything of lesser quality, which consequently hurts the wallet.

Not only that, but most of them will upscale old DVDs into a somewhat convincing imitation of HD.

The biggest annoyance in the new formats is being raped by the price. Both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray seemed to think people would want to pay twice as much for the joy of having it in HD. When you can buy a movie for $15 on DVD or $30-40 for HD, people just vote with their wallets. I'd rather buy 2 movies at regular definition than 1 movie at HD.

Yep, regular DVDs upscaled on my PS3 look fantastic!
