Although Obama tailored his campaign to appear to be the first best choice of a non-Hillary nominee, I believe she brought it on herself. Her early campaign was a textbook example of bad management, wrong-headed choices, and incompetence.

Hillary should have run as a good natured policy wonk and Bill should have presented as that idealistic guy who has been raising money to help people in Africa for the past 7 years. Obama would have run a respectable second, but Hillary would have won comfortably. Instead, Hillary ran as a lying, whining, do-anything-to-win bitch and Bill as a loose cannon taking cheap shots --- anything but Presidential. They ran against Obama using their left-over anger against Republicans from Bill's last term in office. I think the turning point of the whole campaign came in the debate where they were asked about driver's licences for illegal migrants in New York. She seemed to back it and then, a few minutes later, jumped in to say her previous comments didn't mean that. Edwards came in and said something along the lines of "have we just heard Senator Clinton contradict herself in the space of 5 minutes". Hillary just couldn't help herself. She was so intent on winning that she was scrambling to say whatever she thought people wanted to hear and, not being sure what that was at that moment, she made a complete fool of herself. After that, she felt under more pressure and her behaviour just got worse.

I think you are 100% right. By the time the Clintons understood that the campaign for the nomination was not a triumphal coronation march, she was behind and falling further back every week. Too bad. My guess is that she would have made a better President than Obama. (I know you don't agree.)
