It's a crime only if you're a law-abiding citizen. :) For those who do not know the law, it is obviously not a crime!

So the creationist says: Everything must have a designer. God designed everything. I say: Why is God the only exception? Why not make the "designs" (like man) exceptions and make God a creation of man?

Yup. I used to chain smoke. The first thing I did when I woke up was a have a cig, before anything and it was the last thing I did before I slept (technically brushing my teeth was the very last).

She used the old aged adage, if you love me you'll quit it for me. But she helped convince me by telling me she wants to grow old with me and she wants me healthy and all that. Between us though, she was all I needed to tip the balance because before she asked I already wanted to quit. Then I did. Cold turkey.

I cut my IT (and engineering) teeth with a huge mug of coffee and a cigarette smouldering in the ash tray on my desk until the wee hours of morning, long after the common herd had left for the day. It is still difficult for me to tackle anything requiring deep concentration or intense creativity without a smoke burning beside me and caffeine coursing through my veins. Smoking is a definite aid, wonderful for those mini-breaks necessary to survive a furious brain-storm, and the anti-smoking bias that has swept the world has greatly diminished the productivity of technical workers world-wide. On the other hand, though, the dullards left in the industry will live a lot longer. :-D

I smoke unfortunately. Quitting is easy, I've done it a million times. We started a bad habit of smoking inside over the winter and now the house reeks, historically we've always smoked outside. I smoked once while coding for a couple of months and turned almost instantly into a *heavy* chain smoker and realized that was a very bad idea. I don't plan on trying to quit, instead I plan on cutting back to just a few essential ones for a while then think about it once I'm down to a reasonable amount.

How did she ask you? I don't want my girlfriend to start smoking again (she is pregnant so has quit for now but she says she will start again after breast-feeding.)

regards, Paul Watson Ireland & South Africa

It won't matter at all how you ask, all that matters is that the smoker wants to quit in the first place. If they don't there's nothing, literally nothing you can say that will make any difference. It's commonly reported that smoking is harder to quit than heroin or alcohol and the person has to *really* want to quit, once they do it becomes very easy.

For years my wife tried to convince me to quit, I still remember a keyboard littered with ash and a huge ashtray to the left of the screen. I did it the way you are going to try, cut back from 3 an hour to 2 and slowly got it down to 4-6 a day. I went skiing one day and forgot the smokes - didn't bother for the rest of the week and just kept going from there. That lasted a year but I eventually took it up again when we shared a house with a smoker , never to the original volume but 4-6 a day was my intake. It was even easier the last time, I've quit now for 4 years. You are right in that unless YOU want to quit nothing will make you. Best you can do is cut down. Hope something changes your mind soon :)
