I think it's unlikely that the Chinese will give any real figures. It'll be suppressed until after the Olympics at least. After all, we wouldn't want a potential human catastrophe to divert attention away from the games would we?
I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

Actually I think he was inferring that the Chinese would, for political reasons, release no news about the number of casualties and the seriousness of the Quake BEFORE the games as it may cause loss of face on the world stage. The ability or otherwise of their emergency services would also be under scrutiny as thousands of people travel in from all over the world. I do not think he was saying the games were more important. Irony[^] and Satire[^] Go check them out as useful functions of communication in English. :)

Since Rafiq Al-Hariri's assassination by people as yet unknown but assumed to be a neighboring country its been building up, that along with the flagrant support of Hizbullah (by Iran) that has its fighters now numbering just over double the army. Hizbullah is more or less running a country within a country, so the government decides to crack down on its activities then they go nuts and start what is becoming a very bloody coup. I got family in the Sidon and in Zahleh, the first is in the south of Lebanon and in the thick of things and the other is in the mountains. Its really bad and its going to get much, much worse before it gets any better. Sad really. Its such a beautiful place. Any further discussion of this, I'd be obliged if its moved to the SoapBox.

Massive Earthquake hits China Report[^] A bit of a blow considering the Olympics are only weeks away! BTW why do news reports always quote the Richter Scale when 99.99% of people don't know what it is,(They may have heard of it, but do not understand the various levels or even it's logarythmicality(is that a word)), and that seismologists do not use the scale either! If memory serves it is something like the Mercali Scale. Even so it is still a major quake and in a remote area, that could mean major numbers of dead and injured.

The Richter scale measurement is available in a few minutes of the quake just by crunching numbers. The Mercalli scale requires going out to see how much damage was actually done. That's not available for a quick soundbite.

True, but it is not an 'Official' scale. I have had some links to this over the conversation, and Mercalli is only one of several scales used, Richter is Media Scale!
