I assume free phones are sold on a contract with an obscene monthly charge or call charge.

So, I get this phone call from someone (Indian FWIW, from the sound of it, in a very busy telemarketting room), telling me my phone number has been selected for a new phone and digital camera. I told her she had the wrong house, she's obviously looking for stupid people.

AHAHAHA I got that one yesterday. I told him I wasnt interested in it, and he seemed genuinly surprised. It makes me wonder how many people fall for it

Yeah, I said 'you must be looking for stupid people' and hung up because the last time I got the surprise and the 'how could you not want this when you're so lucky' reaction.

My usual answer to unsolicited calls is to say "I'll just get my wife, she deals with these things". Then put the phone down, still connected, and walk away. I go back after 5 minutes and usually they have gone by then. (Once had a girl hang on for nearly 10 mins!) I figure the call is costing them money and while I hold them they can't annoy someone else, so I am doing my bit for society as a whole! :)

Aren't all phones free with a contract? That's been pretty much standard practice for the last 10 years in the UK. Really wasteful system if you ask me as people upgrade their phone just because it's the only thing you seem to be able to get out of your operator. I know loads of people who get themselves a new phone every year and most years stick it straight on e-bay still boxed.

In the US cheaper models are free (the ones that can be paid for at ~$10/mo over the length of the contract - basic models or ones that're end of life). Newer ones with loads of features or bling are extra.
