Anyone here have experience with the Nokia N800 series Internet tablets? When I say "experience" I mean anything from general usage (and what you thought of it) to development of an application for the device (and your thoughts on that). I'm planning on going to MicroCenter sometime today, to check one out, verse the iPAQ 211; just wanted to get feedback if anyone has anything useful to say about it. Thanks.

Yes there is, which is why I said the 800 series; but the 810 has some bad press already (less storage than the 800 and only a single memory card slot). There's also an 810 WiMax, which looks to have a much improved keyboard GPS, in Wifi range ... but it was just released in April.

I've had the N810 since January and really love it! No problems with any websites - including Flash based. The GPS does take awhile to lock. I did get an 8GB microSD card (needed mini adapter) for extra storage. The slideout keyboard taks a little while to get use to but no problems here either. I replaced the included case with one made by PDair. Video streaming works great too. The OS is Maemo (Linux derived).

Are you planning on loading OS 2008[^]? or did it come with that? Do you use, or have you tried the GPE suite? If so, how do you like it? If not, what do you use? I just went over and looked at both the 800 and 810, but they turned out to be "demo" models only; non-working (because that helps me choose). I was a little shocked at the price difference between the 800 ($219) and the 810 ($409); they didn't have the N810 WiMax.

The first thing I did was update to OS2008 (as it had come out about a month before I got my tablet). The update used the USB cable connected to my PC. I don't know about the GPE suite. I have the following additional apps installed: Canola2, DiskUsage, GPSCamera, Maemo-Mapper, MaemoPad, MPlayer, OpenNTPD, StreamTuner, UnZip, VideoCenter and WiFiInfo. There are some additional components that are installed to support the applications. It has Adobe PDF Reader and I read someone is working on a PIM port for the 810. I don't know if there is a QuickOffice equivalent package available (like the one on my Nokia 6682 S60 based cell) I use VideoCenter all the time - viewing GeekBrief.tv I haven't signed up for the WayFinder subscription yet (enables full GPS Direction application) I just read that there will be another OS refresh this summer when the WiMax version is released. I got my Tablet from buy.com (currently $398) and got an extra battery. Battery lasts around 4 hours while powered on and several days powered down. I also got an extra AC adapter (one for home and one for work / travel). I got a N95 mobile mount base (suction cup mount) - the supplied N810 base mount required drilling holes in the dashboard. The N810 holding bracket can be attached to the N95 base. Nokia is suppose to be coming out with an external battery pack to allow for extra on time when an AC outlet is not nearby. The 800 does not have a slide out keyboard. The 810 does not have FM Radio. The browser works really well (Mozilla based). The unit has an RSS feed reader app. Skype is supported. I connect to the Internet using 802.11g/n Access Points at work and home and thru my Nokia Cell using BlueTooth everywhere else. My Cingular plan includes unlimited Internet access. No problems getting both home and work e-mails. It did take a few minutes to find the "don't delete messages off server" option. This is one of the few expensive gadgets that I bought "sight unseen" - there weren't any local dealers that had them in stock - I'm really glad I took the plunge. I did spend a lot of time reading the online reviews and viewing the YouTube videos that others had posted, but it is still not the same as seeing one in person and holding it in your hands.

I've got a N800 that got around Thanksgiving last year. I've really enjoyed using it. I mainly use it for a ebook reader and music player. WiFi connection for browsing is really good. I want to do some development work on it, but life has prevented me from finding time to do more than read a little on how to do that. Sometime soon, I hope. As a PIM, I've been trying OSSO that was ported to the N800 series and it's interesting. It's got a lot of what I'd like but is still missing some things. Oh well, nothings perfect. Definitely worth a look though. OS2008 works fine on mine. I've got a 4G and 8G memory cards, so don't have much worries about space. Mike
