So, I am working on my new installer. I touch nothing, I am reading it's help. The program disappears, Vista closes. Actually it closed all programs, told me it was installing three updates, and then started again. I was not online.

Check your Windows Update settings and click on Change settings.... If you've got Install updates automatically or Download updates but let me choose whether to install them selected, Vista will grab the updates whenever it sees them while it's online. If Install updates automatically is selected, it'll install them at the specified time, regardless of when it downloaded them. Otherwise, it'll pester you once in awhile. I personally have it set to only notify - not automatically download or install. To verify that this was indeed an automatic update installation, you can go to the Windows Update applet and click on View update history. You should be able to correlate those logs with the time Windows kicked you out.

Vista is smart. It detected that you were working on the installer of its replacement, it went into defense mode and stopped what you were doing. :-D

But that's not a Vista issue! that has to be your setup (hardware, software running, etc) Vista's not all that bad, but maybe it's because i'm just sick of hearing MS rants today. X| (If you want a sample of an MS rant just let me know :cool: )

My Vista hasn't once rebooted after an update without asking me if I wanted to, or wait up to 4 hours, at which time I could wait again, after I have changed the settings to my preference. But then again - it also only installs updates when I want it to, because I changed the settings. Vista has been the most stable and well running OS from MS I've ever had.

My Vista hasn't once rebooted after an update without asking me if I wanted to, or wait up to 4 hours, at which time I could wait again, after I have changed the settings to my preference. But then again - it also only installs updates when I want it to, because I changed the settings. Vista has been the most stable and well running OS from MS I've ever had.

Well, it happened once :). The fact that it did not happen to you does not mean that it will not happen to you or anyone else in future. From all the evidence, this behavior may be triggered only in very rare conditions. I think such bugs happen to everyone.

I've never had any problems with Vista, either.

I agree. I think it is outrageous. This is not a new issue, however. It could also happen with XP. Some people in MS will say that a reboot is needed to make the update effective and it is important for security that the update is made. Thus they think that a compulsory reboot is justified. This "we know better than you so we will force you to do it our way" attitude is really annoying. Not everyone in MS suffers from it, but some do.

My Vista pops up a dialogue after Windows updates. It says my computer will be restarting in n seconds, and it has two buttons, "Restart Now", and "Delay Restart". The latter is disabled. :mad:

My Dad gets that - he'll be doing something in Excel or Word and the machine ust shuts down. I've told him it's likely to be automatic updates. Guess I've got a support job on next time I see him...
